Can iWeb be used with any other domain hosting sites, or was it so
specific to apple that it is now useless? I notice that when you menu
select to "setup domain" that it tries to launch icloud.

Thanks

you can export the web site, then upload it anywhere. i think it even
supports direct ftp (it's been years since i used it).

I sure can. I use it with a domain I set up with 1and1, which was
recommended here.

I'm still using it and will continue to do so until it's peeled out my
cold dead hand--or, when it don't work no more.

I still have several sites made with iWeb at my host's servers. As far
as I know it still works.

I use iWeb to maintain a website for a local community group, and make
changes every month. In total I modify/maintain a total of about 5
websites using iWeb.

Thanks for all the replies. I will give it another look and maybe even
read the book and see if I can get it to work!

I'm not sure why you say harder and useless. I use it all the time
with a non-icloud/mobile.me website; I push a button, it syncs. That
easy.

There's a book? If you run into issues let me know, perhaps I can help.

I had to do that as well, as for whatever reason iWeb didn't want to do
the uploading. This helped me learn how inefficient the damned thing
was, as I saw how many copies of the same file there were (a copy of
the background image for each page, for example). I currently use
Sandvox.

Seems I remember reading that myself long ago, but that's not how it
works. You just make some switches on the publishing preferences; from
MobileMe or Local Folder to ftp server. I use the ftp server and I
continue to just hit the "publish site" button and it updates it.

I'm using the last published version 3.0.4. In one of the initial
offerings (v1.x I believe), it published all/most pages as whole
images. So if there was text and you wanted clip it, it was not
available. It really sucked. To this date, I still hear people
bad-rapping iWeb 1.x because it did that so very long ago. Should
consider the failings of Word 1.x either, in considering it's current
incarnation?

I don't know when ftp server options became available, but it seemed
like they were there with the 2.x version as well.

Bingo! That's what I'm talking about. iWeb isn't the only program that
gets improved upon, by the way!

By the way for anybody who'd like to try it, it seems you can
apparently download 3.02 or 2.04 for free directly from Apple:

3.0.2:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1104

2.04:
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl15

Say, those may only be for updating existing programs now as I ponder it.

the original iweb used images for text when the font was not a standard
font so that it could guarantee that it looked the way the designer
intended.

unfortunately, that made web pages huge and non-searchable.

i'm pretty sure 1.0 could export a site, which you then could upload
however you wanted.

later versions made it so you could do it directly.

however, it's been years since i used iweb, especially 1.x.

Interesting; I wondered why some pages would be images and some were
left alone.

Yes..iLife '06 (Avondale Media) by Jim Heid devotes a short (about 20 pp) chapter
to it.

I probably wouldn't have liked it anyway.

Every web page builder I've ever tried generated HTML that was garbage.

Some of them, granted, made pages that were tolerable
on the outside....

As noted in a later post, I think that is only an update for those who
have an earlier version of iWeb.

If they were all garbage, I can assure you that iWeb would not have
changed your opinion of web page builders.
