For many years I have been running a package called Claris Draw (version
1.0Bv3) under MacOS 8 then MacOS 9, and have many drawings produced
during that time. I am now looking to migrate up to MacOS X over the
summer and would like to have something to replace this nice simple
drawing package.

The obvious choice would be AppleWorks 6, however that doesnąt appear to
have some of the nicer features of Claris Draw, like layers for one.

I have explored some of the other major contenders such as Adobe
Illustrator, Macromind Freehand, Corel Draw and Canvas, but none of them
(including Appleworks) seem to be able to import my existing Claris Draw
documents.

It is possible to go via PICT format (the only other option under łSave
As˛ in Claris Draw), but information is either lost or scrambled in the
translation.

Does anyone have any suggestions of packages that have the functionality
and simplicity of Claris Draw, can read Claris Draw documents directly
(including editing them) and runs under MacOS X?

Obviously I can continue to use Claris Draw in classic mode, but Iąd
like to have a native replacement.

Thanks,

did you try the latest version of Canvas? (8.03 I think)
I believe GraphicConverter should open CD files (I saw it opening
incredibly weird formats) but I fear, as it then turn them into bitmap,
that most your info will disappear...
