I downloaded a .ps file, and I can't seem to open it.

I tried Photoshop, JPEG View and Canopener.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Get ahold of GhostScript, it lets you view them. Or just dump it to a
printer. .ps files are in PostScript format, they're intended for printing.

The usual suggestion is GhostScript, an enormous Unix port available at
the usual Info-mac mirror sites. I've tried it and I've found it to be
very unstable and unfriendly. I don't think it was ever finished.

The best solution that I know of is to convert your .ps file into an Adobe
Acrobat file with an Adobe utility called Distiller. Alas, you have to pay
for it. It comes with Acrobat Pro, and I'm told it also comes with recent
versions of Adobe Illustrator.

Well, postscript files are text files, so use a text editor! Just remember
to use one that is NOT limited by the 32k limit of the built in OS
routines (i.e. BBEdit, the best text editor in the known AND unknown
universe!).

I have not had much luck with these either. GhostScript is supposed to,
but it has lousy resolution.

I would just use "DropPS" from http://www.barebones.com (under the
freeware section) and print the file directly to your postscript printer.

(.ps is for postscript files)

Distiller also comes with PageMaker 6. BTW, Adobe has completely re-done
their pricing model for Acrobat. The current 1400 buck Acrobat Pro package
will become a 300 buck package with the release of version 3. You'll also
get Capture, a heretofore 800 dollar package.

It's probably a postscript file, you'll either need Ghostwriter or
failing that somethink to squirt it at a postscript printer.

... Oops should be GhostScript

You can also use a utility called DropPS. Its a program which sends a
postscript file to the printer.
You can get it from info-mac archives, probably in the util directory.

There are also converters from ps2eps+, EPStoPICT, epsconverter, etc
which may be useful. Umich somewhere.

For Photoshop, I think you need a plugin for newer versions, and those other two, I am not sure if they open PostScript files, but you can try it like this: http://www.paintshoppro.com/en/pages/ps-file/ inside PaintShop Pro, it should work without a problem. In case it doesn't, there is a chance your file might be broken.

Another clueless Google Groups user replying to a post from 1996 as if the
topic has any relevance today, twenty one years later. Thanks, Google!
