Two days ago, I upgraded to Lion, using Mail 5.2 on a Mac Pro 10.7.3
Since then, no sent attachments have shown in the top messages pane in
Classic Layout. They should be showing under the paper clip. All
previously sent emails with attachments show the attachments
correctly, even since upgrading.
Having Googled the problem, it seems a few others have had this issue
over the last 10 years, but surely this can't still be an issue?
I've overcome the problem by bcc'ing every email to myself. The bcc
shows the attachment, so I keep that email and discard the sent
version.
Have I missed a preference or setting, or is this really a bug?

One further bit of information is that the exact same issue is also on
a MackBook Pro and a MacBook Air. All three machines have been set up
independently, and all are running Mail 5.2 with Lion 10.7.3. In
fact, the MacBook Air was purchased with Lion and Mail 5 already
installed.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has this issue, and if it
has a cure - or observations on what I am doing wrong!

I'm running Mail 5.2 with Lion 10.7.3 and have Mail set to classic view.
The attachments show both as an indication plus the no. of attachments
in list view and as expected in the emails themselves.

Have you added the 'attachments' column to the view settings?
Right-click on the title of any column and you get a list that you can
choose from, including 'Attachments'.

Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere - I've just changed
news providers and deleted a load of postings unread.

Thanks for your reply, Sara.

Yes, I do already have the 'attachments' column showing, and I agree
that the attachments do show in the emails themselves.

In the top pane, under 'attachments', it does list all attachments I
have _received_ (with a paper clip and the number of items). This is
perfectly correct. It also shows all attachments I have sent with
Snow Leopard Mail (with a paper clip and the number of items). This
is also correct.

However, it does _not_ show any attachments at all, which I have sent
with Lion Mail 5.2 This is the problem. Maybe I didn't make this
clear.

As this exact same problem occurs on three totally different Macs, all
running Lion and Mail 5.2, I think it must be a bug, but it seems
strange that nobody else has commented.

I would interested to know if you have the same problem, or anyone
else. If it is a bug, I'll report it.

I may be missing something totally but if you guys could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Most times when I attach something to an email, it's imbedded within the message as an open file. There is no, icon. This has been annoying me and I can't seem to find this magical Utilities or Terminal or Application choice that I've noticed on other blogs.

I have precisely the same problem. Older sent items with attachments
do show the paperclip symbol and the number of attachments, newer ones
show nothing.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I haven't yet changed over to Google's new way of viewing the postings, and missed some. Perhaps this means I should change.

The problem hasn't gone away, and I did report it as a bug to Apple. However, it seems that it was a known bug, and it's disappointing that it it hasn't been fixed in various versions of Lion. I suppose it might just possibly be fixed in Mountain Lion's Mail.

I still find it very annoying on all my three Macs running Lion. I realise that most people don't have the issue, and so it doesn't concern them.

Clive, I have the same problem:
the paperclip (attachments icon) doesn't show for mails which I sent using Lion 10.7.3, Mail 5.2, MacbookPro.
It does show for mails that I had sent with my old Macbook and OS.

If I drag these sent emails to a mailbox folder on my mac, then the paperclip/attachment icon still doesn't show up.

My drafts mailbox has the same problem.

My inbox doesn't have this problem.

Hope apple fixes this soon - it's so useful for finding sent attachments.

Yvette and unknown, to show an attachment as an icon in an email body (instead of showing the attachment's first page fully embedded), ctrl-click on the attachment in the email body and select "view as icon".

Hello,
Could you help me with a problem!
"Attachments may be unavailable". I can't download any file on Gmail with my laptop, but with another, it is normal.
Thank you so much!
