This is My opinion!
Cute? yes. Cost effective? Hardly.
You probably will have to reserve a couple of megs of HD space
in order for this thing to work at all, since even compressed
sound can be quite large in size, and you know how precious
HD space can be. :) I'll rather spend $30 on a real answering
machine.
In case you'll still bent on getting that nifty computer-cum-
answering machine, the first thing to do is get a voice-mail
capable modem.

Actually, most of the voice messages I receive via my SupraFAXModem take up
around 150K (max, for a > 1 minute message). I usually don't receive more
than 4 or 5 a day, so disk space is minimal.
As for cost effectiveness, add the price of a fax machine to that $30, and
using your computer this way can turn out to be pretty cheap.
Have fun!

Sometimes, that wasted space is worth the benefits. F'rinstance, I'd
love to be able to leave my modem and modem software on all the time so I
could access my computer at home from work. However, this would
interfere with the answering machine.
I know there's a program for the IBM that will let you do this, and when
the phone rings, it decides if it's a fax, a regular modem connection, or
a person. If it's a person, it turns on the answering machine software.
If it's a fax, it starts your fax software. If it's a regular modem, it
starts your modem software. And, the real kicker is, this thing is
ftp-able. (Though I believe that you have to have your own fax/modem
software.)
Of course, I hate the IBM. But I'd love to see a Mac-equivalent of this.
