Supposedly, and I really don't know the truth here, is that there is a
mythical 1.5 upgrade for $29.95 that also includes a TOC AddIt. I've not seen
any press releases nor heard anything from Claris. As far as *I* know for a
fact, 1.0v4 is the latest and there is no TOC capability.

Any Claris folks shed some light on this conundrum?

SO, that's the official work from the horse's mouth itself. I called the Claris phone number, and I was told that the upgrade WILL NOT SHIP UNTIL JAN. 94. So, all of us chomping at the bit can relax. 1.0v4 is the most current.

Enjoy.

That would be grand. I've been putting up with MWPro, but
only just barely tolerating.

I'm still waiting (but not holding my breath) for the mythical
equation editor...

Would be much appreciated!

MACWRITE PRO 1.5 ANNOUNCED

New version delivers full System 7 Pro support; ClarisWorks to also
support System 7 Pro in future version

Santa Clara, Calif.-- October 4, 1993 -- Claris Corporation today
announced MacWrite Pro 1.5, a new version of the popular Apple Macintosh
word processing software that fully supports the new System 7 Pro
operating system from Apple Computer, Inc. Available this fall, MacWrite
Pro 1.5 is the first Claris product to support all aspects of System 7
Pro, including AppleScript, QuickTime and PowerTalk, the new collaboration
software built into System 7 Pro, letting users easily consolidate and
share data. MacWrite Pro 1.5 highlights PowerTalk's universal electronic
mail technology, and is "mail-capable" for sending and receiving
electronic mail.

Also new to MacWrite Pro 1.5 is a Table of Contents feature to provide
users with a sophisticated means for organizing and presenting long,
complex documents.

"MacWrite Pro 1.5 users will be able to immediately realize all of the
productivity benefits of System 7 Pro's great collaboration capabilities,
such as document sharing, electronic mail and task automation," said Dick
Gorman, vice president of worldwide marketing for Claris. "MacWrite Pro
has always provided tremendous value with its many features and low price.
With all its new capabilities, MacWrite Pro 1.5 is truly a full-featured
word processor that grows with all levels of professional and educational
users."

PowerTalk

MacWrite Pro 1.5 will also support PowerTalk, the software built into
System 7 Pro providing users with substantial productivity gains by
integrating electronic-mail capabilities within their applications. Other
collaborative features of PowerTalk include digital-signature technology,
reducing the amount of paper-shuffling that comes in the document approval
process. Claris said that ClarisWorks, the best-selling integrated
program, will also offer PowerTalk support in an upcoming release.

AppleScript, Apple events and QuickTime

With support for AppleScript and over 40 pre-defined Apple events built-in
to MacWrite Pro 1.5, end-users, third-party developers and Information
Systems managers can customize and automate tasks such as mass file
conversions, batch printing and mail-merge. Claris is including free
AppleScript samples for mail-merge with Claris FileMaker Pro, a mass file
conversion "droplet" (users drag and "drop" files onto the icon) for quick
and easy conversions from several word processing and text formats, and a
batch printing script. New support for QuickTime movies lets users place
and play back movies anywhere in a MacWrite Pro document.

Additional New Features for Education Users

In addition to the System 7 Pro-specific features, MacWrite Pro 1.5 adds
a new Table of Contents (TOC) feature that gives users a simple and
flexible way to automatically generate a customizable TOC for long,
complex documents such as business reports, academic papers, or
instructional booklets. MacWrite Pro 1.5 lets users create a TOC by
applying special TOC styles to the headers in their documents.

To update the TOC after changes have been made to document headers, the
user chooses Table of Contents from the menu and the TOC is updated. If
the user wants to change the look of their TOC, they simply change the
styles associated with the TOC entries. A change to one entry updates all
entries at that level.

MacWrite Pro 1.5 also adds Edit Graphic Object (EGO) support so users can
include and edit graphic objects from EGO-supported server applications,
such as math and science equations created in MathType from Design
Science, and Expressionist from Prescience. Command-clicking on the object
in a MacWrite Pro 1.5 document brings up the application used to create
the object for quick editing and automatic updating.

To further aid education users, multi-lingual dictionaries in Spanish,
French, and German will be included free in the U.S. educational version.

About MacWrite Pro

MacWrite Pro provides users with a combination of features, power and
usability for creating documents with impact. Features like style sheets,
one-step table creation, and floating tool palettes give users power
without sacrificing ease-of-use. Users can easily wrap text around
imported graphics, or new to version 1.5, QuickTime movies, and set up
variable columns on the same page to create more complex documents.
Multiple headers and footers, detailed document statistics and the new
Table of Contents feature allow for larger, more intricate documents.

Users can also easily share information with other programs and people.
Aside from the collaboration and electronic mail capabilities provided by
PowerTalk, Publish & Subscribe support allows for incorporating "live"
text and graphics elements from other applications, such as Excel charts
or MacDraw Pro illustrations, even with other users over a network. For
sites with multiple word processors and computers, MacWrite Pro can import
and export files from WordPerfect, WriteNow and Macintosh, DOS and Windows
versions of Microsoft Word, as well as 20 other popular Macintosh and PC
formats. Graphics files may be inserted anywhere in MacWrite Pro
documents in TIFF, EPSF, MacPaint, PICT, and PICT2.

System Requirements and Support

Requiring only 2.5 megabytes of memory under System 7 (1 MB under System
6.05) and about 3 MB of disk space for all program files, MacWrite Pro is
accessible to virtually all Macintosh users, particularly first-time
computer purchasers choosing lower memory and hard disk options.

Pricing and Availability

MacWrite Pro 1.5 will be available for a suggested U.S. retail price (SRP)
of $249. Current U.S. owners of MacWrite Pro 1.0 may upgrade to MacWrite
Pro 1.5 for $29 through March 31, 1994. Those who purchased MacWrite Pro
1.0 after August 15, 1993 may receive the upgrade at no cost, plus
shipping charges. Current U.S. owners of earlier versions of MacWrite or
other selected Macintosh word processing and integrated applications may
purchase MacWrite Pro for $69 (SRP), also through March 31, 1994. For
more information on MacWrite Pro 1.5, call (800) 544-8554.

Thanks for the info, Steve. One thing: will it be ready 1/94 like MWP
was ready 2 years ago?
