Hi All ..

I have a quick question regarding Japanese fonts in PDF documents. From the
Acrobat Reader 4.0.x ReadMe.pdf:

> Asian Font Packs are available for Acrobat Reader 4.0. With any language
> version of Acrobat Reader 4.0, you can
> display Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files that contain text in Chinese
> Simplified, Chinese Traditional,
> Japanese, and Korean (CJK). If the author of a PDF file embeds CJK fonts in the
> document, then any language
> version of Reader 4.0 will be able to display the CJK text on any system
> without additional software. If the author
> uses CJK fonts but does not embed them in the document, then you will need
> access to the correct Asian fonts in
> order to view the PDF file on non-native systems. All you need to do is install
> the appropriate Asian font pack for use
> with Acrobat Reader.

Can some one please clarify this sentence for me:

``If the author of a PDF file embeds CJK fonts in the document, then any
language
version of Reader 4.0 will be able to display the CJK text on any system
without additional software.''

I take that to mean *IF* I embed Japanese fonts into the PDF file then the
default acrobat reader can display the document without the need for the Asian
Font Pack? Is that true?

If it is, I need some help figuring out how to do that. I am trying to use
Acrobat 4.0 US, MS Word 2001 Japanese, and Acrobat Reader 4.0.5 US on MacOS
9.x to do this. I have the Japanese font pack installed in Acrobat 4. My
Reader is still the default install. M$ Word doesn't seem to want to embed
Japanese fonts. Only US fonts show up in the "Always Embed" list. I can
however, open the PDF file once it has been generated, and by using Acrobat 4
tell it to embed the Japanese font. Everything looks great inside Acrobat. The
File->Document Info->Fonts dialog shows the font as embedded. But after I save
the file and try to load it up in stock Reader, I get CMAP errors and the font
does not come up as embedded. Any ideas or is the font pack needed whether the
Japanese fonts are embedded or not?

Thanks in advance.
