How can I disable horizontal scrolling in Indesign?

The view scrolls wildly – especially horizontally – and seemingly at
random.

It's maddening – insane – not insanely great.

I tried System Preferences > Mouse, but the settings there don't help.

I can't think of why horizontal scrolling would be acceptable in Finder
windows and other programs, but not in InDesign. Or is your mention of
InDesign a red herring?

What brand and model mouse do you have?

Why do you guess scrolling is so wild and random?

I've never tried to disable horizontal scrolling. You may or may not be
able to use USB Overdrive to do something like that.

MagicPrefs works well for this. It has a whole range of custom scrolls,
clicks, taps and swipes. It's possible to disable just horizontal
scrolling.

InDesign does seem particularly sensitive to mad scrolling. If it's
getting annoying, I activate MagicPrefs from the menu bar.

I'm using a Magic Mouse.

I'm not the only one having this problem.

I found the Magic Prefs prefs, but I don't see horizontal scrolling
control there.

(I don't want to use Terminal, because I'm not familiar with it and I
might make a fatal error by using it improperly.

If you disable horizontal scrolling, what do you do if the image is
wider than the window?

Any chance you remember how to turn off side scrolling? The window keeps sliding all over the place as I try and scroll down

Try InDesign prefs> Guides & Pasteboard>Pasteboard Options> Horizontal Margins =set to .5 inch. This keeps the paste board narrow so there is no place to scroll to.

These instructions work on iMac with CS5.5. Must work on windows pc too, but there may be a different way to get to that preference. I don't know yet if this preference setting will stay with just this document or will become a default in new docs. You can also set the vertical Pasteboard margins and keep every tight to the "piece of paper" you are working on. Scrolling still works page to page in a vertical direction.

This has been bothersome for me too, but I figured there just had to be a solution. Back to work on the doc!!

The original post was six years ago.

I can't say I've ever had any problem with "horiztonal scrolling" in
InDesign, especially not "random", other than the ridiculous lack of
scrollbar arrows (an OS-wide issue!) making it more difficult to to
easily move the document around. :-(

"Random" scrolling sounds more like either a user issue with a
touch-control capable mouse / trackpad or perhaps an issue with the
keyboard or USB port if either mouse or keyboard is wired.
