I need to add a field that does not already exist to the exif
information of a file of a scanned photo. As far as I have been able to
determine, my standard tool, exiftool, cannot do this. Is there a Mac
app that will?

Exiftool, and I suppose most tools, can change a writeable field if it
already exists. The problem is to create a field that does not already
exist. Specifically, in the group exiftool identifies as "Composite" I
need to create one or more fields to specify the creation date of the
file.

Note: I have already posted on this general subject in alt.photography
and comp.sys.mac.misc. Responses suggest I need a Mac specific app to
do this, so I am narrowing the query down to this group.

vs crossposting".

Multi-posting

If you send the same message to multiple news groups separately, it
forces the rest of us to download your message multiple times. Also, it
means if someone replies to one of your posts in one news group, the
other places you posted the message will not see that reply! This is
known as "multi-posting", and is generally regarded as inconsiderate.

If you want to post the same message to multiple news groups, please
include all of the news groups, separated by commas, in the "Newsgroups"
line of a single post, like so:

Newsgroups: comp.sys.mac.system,comp.sys.mac.apps

This way the message is simultaneously posted to all specified news
groups. More importantly, when someone replies to your message in one
group, that reply is automatically sent in all other news groups to
which you sent the post! This allows all involved to see the entire
conversation, no matter which news group from which they access your
post. This is called "cross-posting" and is the proper way to do it.

Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM
filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting
messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google
Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts.

Thanks, but that's not exactly what I was doing. Posting to other
groups led me to comp.sys.mac.apps as the obvious place to find an app.
I started in alt.photography, since that seemed like the logical place
to start. However, I was getting too much stuff related to PCs.

At the time I thought exiftool was a Mac tool so I moved to
comp.sys.mac.misc. When I found out it ran on many platforms, but
didn't seem to be able to do what I wanted to do, I came to
comp.sys.mac.apps to see if I could find an app that would.

I now find Composite groups are derived from data in other groups, and
it appears if there is no field in the file there is no way to create
one after the fact. At least nobody has been able to point me to a way.
That being the case, I seem to have reached a dead-end.

BTW, I have cross-posted this to alt.photography and to
comp.sys.mac.misc to close off the discussion on netnews. I have
discovered an exiftool forum and I am hoping, if there is a solution, I
will find it there.

That makes sense. It wasn't readily apparent to me. Thanks for
explaining.

I was going to mention iView MediaPro as a Mac app always to be
recommended for photo organizing and managing, but on scanning the
manual it appears that while it can modify the exif data in one or two
exif fields (in some files anyway, and if the data is already present),
there's no mention I could see of adding exif fields (except, maybe, by
doing an XML export and then hand-editing the resulting XML file).

I've absolutely no idea if it's what you're after, but
there's a RISC OS prog called Jclean, the help file says it

It might be based on a prog from elsewhere that might be of
use to you. IYSWIM

Thanks, but I finally got it figured out. It is pretty convoluted.

I had to download .ExifTool_config, which automatically creates
Composite group entries as required. Then, by creating a
DateTimeOriginal entry in the EXIF group I got the desired entry in
Composite.

Robert-

Where in the file is EXIF data stored? If at the beginning or end, it
might be possible to strip the EXIF data from a file that has a complete
set, concatenate it to a scanned file, and then edit it to suit.

Such a combined file might appear "defective", but if you can open it,
you might be able to re-save it as a legitimate file. Or the EXIF
editing program might fix it for you!
