I would guess my performance would be better if I initialized my
partitions with their own software but I'm wondering before I take that
plunge (it'll be a lot of work), which is better?
I've noticed a slight performance increase with HDT over some old program
I originally partitioned my gig drive with but I can't tell if
Silverlining is much better (my Apple external drive is on my Mac at
work). Silverlining allows me to set the interleave which dramatically
increased the performance on our drives on our Pentiums at work (but we
suspect they weren't configured very well). I'm tempted to go with
Silverlining because of this but I thought I'd solicit other people's
opinions.

I think that 1.7 has already been released (to some) and will be shipping
in greater numbers soon.

Version 1.7 has very recently been released.

The latest version of Silverline is 5.6 rev 23. It reportedly has several
bugs on PPC's (which I don't have) and the on-screen LED is broken. They
promise 5.6.1 in short order to correct all problems.
