I started up and printed a short sheet of text but it gave me 16 pages
of post-script programing noise, starting with:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8
%APLProducer: (Version 10.6.2 (Build 10C540) Quartz PS Context)
%%Title: (DEVONthink \342\200\224 "Test print")
%Creator: (DEVONthink Pro: cgpdftops CUPS filter)
Creation date and so forth for many many pages...
I've produced the same results from TextEdit, JEdit and other printing
programs. It all looks the same, just PS dumps.
Where to start. Xerox support is miserable and demands big money after
your warranty expires.
HELP!

-- Beware the delicate, tiny, very talented celebrity starlets.
I've re-installed drivers (twice?), and in printer setup I have tried
the other (few) options available "Generic PostScript Printer" which
prints text and color fine in a limited test. Generic PCL Laser Printer
which also prints fine but only in black and white.
Still I can't get "Auto" to operate (once used before), and the
bona-fide selected-through-Printer-Utility-"Other" option for Phaser
6120 just produces another 16 pages of PS noise.
Xerox is not a company I'll be throwing my money away on again. I have
found their customer service sucked in the extreme every time I dealt
with them. The DMV has more attendant (and likely knowledgeable)
service.
After a good long time trying to find the right google rabbit-hole of
related misery I found this at techblog.lucidillusion.org:
"According to the Xerox website the Phaser 6120 is not supported in
Snow Leopard. However if one downloads the custom PPD file from the
OpenPrinting database the printer works perfectly."
Which then pointed me to this:
http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Xerox-Phaser_6120
...which provides a .ppd file, which I shlepped into /Library/Printers/PPDs/
After a 20 minute test print (using the "Generic PostScript Printer"
driver which passes a tiny color test), I'll test it out and report my
findings.

If you look under the Drivers section, you will find that Xerox has
posted a driver for OS X 10.6 now. It is not quite complete as the
Color PDE is 32 bit only. That means that you would need to run all
your applications in 32 bit mode to take full advantage of this PDE. If
you don't need this PDE, the driver will work fine with 64 bit
applications.

Unbelievably, you will need to install Foomatic-RIP and probably
Ghostscript for this PPD to work. You can get these at
<http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macos
x/foomatic>

I've downloaded that driver and installed it, and it doesn't work for
me. Everything I am running is in 32 bit, I suppose as my newly
inherited iMac is a early Intel box. It's "model identifier is
"iMac6,1".

Thanks for the input! When I found this driver wouldn't work either I
simply returned to the generic postscript printer driver and at least
finished my printing job; scans of family documents for the wife.
But I have also found that my custom paper sizes are all greyed out and
I can't get to them anymore. Damn this stuff is a nuisance!
