Folks,
What Usenet news readers will be compatible with OSX 10.14? I'm using
MacSoup, which I believe will not run under 10.14. Hogwasher? Thoth?
Unison? Other?
TIA,
Ron

All the command-line ones. Thunderbird (but it's lousy).

Didn't the Thoth developer pick up his toys and go home? Again?

Unison is not being developed, but Hogwasher is. Might be your best bet.

I don't know about the others, but Unison should work - the System
Information lists version 2.2 as being a 64-bit app.

Under 10.13.5, and many preceding increments of OS, I have used both
Thoth v1.9.1 and Unison v2.1.10. I'm use it now. I believe there was
a v2.1.11, but I could never make it work properly.

I'm not aware of solid confirmation that MacSOUP will *not* run in
10.14, although it doesn't look like a good bet.

As Your Name pointed out, Unison 2.2 is 64-bit and should work. I gave
Hogwasher a try several months ago and found it much superior to
Thunderbird. But Usenet is becoming so marginal that it's no longer
worth $36 to me for the step up to Hogwasher from an inferior but free
alternative like Unison.

That is certainly a good sign, but no guarantee it will contiue to run in
future OS versions and since it is no longer being developed it is
almost certainly not the best choice.

I like Hogwasher pretty well. The developer has been very responsive to the
issues I’ve had with it over the last couple years. And he’s fixed them
all.

But slrn is my old standby. It never has any problem.

I've never gotten 2.2 to work propertly. I've forgotten how it's
messed up, and won't be reviewing (yet again).

Unison and Thoth have both discontinued. The only one still, so far,
being updated is Hogwasher.

MacSOUP definitely won't run in 10.15 as it is a 32-bit application, but
it might work in 10.14 "with compromises". If it has compatibility
problems with 10.14 I doubt they will be fixed.

Similar argument from me. As I can't be bothered learning a new
newsreader and don't see much point paying for another one, I'll
probably stick with MacSOUP in a VM running an older macOS version.

I also can't be bothered stepping back to command line newsreaders,
though MacSOUP's keyboard shortcuts were similar enough to trn that it
wouldn't be hard for me to revert to something similar.

Version 2.2 works fine for me in High Sierra, other than a *very*
occasional crash.

I did start fresh with this as my newsreader after a forced computer
upgrade (I was using Thoth on MacOS 10.2 previously). Maybe the
problems mentioned a couple of times in this topic are due to upgrading
the app over the top of old version preferences, subscription files,
etc. ... possibly something to do with the chageover to being a
freeware app (perhaps it's having problems reading the no longer needed
old registration data).

I tried Hogwasher and found it incredibly awful, but that was a long
time ago, so it was probably an old version before it was overhauled.

No. As I said previously, Thunderbird does USENET and there are many
command line newsreaders as well. I am using slrn myself, on my Mac, and
have done for years. And it is still being updated.

It's been a long time since I used nn or tin or trn, but I would be
surprised if some of those (or their branches) were not also still being
maintained. I'm nearly positive that Pine is still maintained as well.

There are even some *nix based GUI clients that I believe can still be
made to work on mac OS, Claws, perhaps?

Evidently SeaMonkey is still a thing, though it's been years since I
looked at it. I'd guess it is similarly awful to Thunderbird since they
have the same progenitor.

It's not lousy. I've been using it for over a decade. Was my mail
client under windows, just usenet on Mac (for 10 years...).

It's not perfect. But what is?

Thunderbird is maintained. The focus is not on Usenet, but the usenet

It is a newsreader that lacks many basic features. That is "lousy" to
me. YMMV.

Just a pity that Crossover (and all WINE-based solutions) is such utter
useless crap that never ever fully works properly. Unsurprising since
to run Windoze you obviously need Windoze, not some half-assed,
cut-down version with most of the stuff missing. :-\

In what way?

Layout subscribed groups to the left, messages top, message bodies bottom.

In the end usenet is an all but dead "channel" - so you use what works.

Simple and functional IMO, warts and all.

I've been using it for email and NGs well over 10 years.

Big pluses are open source, reliable, easy to use, configurable and free.

I can't think of many negatives. Maybe NG web links sometimes don't
work. UI fonts tricky to configure without a plugin.

I've tried all the alternatives regularly mentioned on threads like this
- and they don't come close.

I downloaded it and took a look. There doesn't seem to be a good
way to see the branching of threads. If sorted on Subject, all
posts with that subject are listed in chronological order with
subthreads entangled in one another. If there is a better way to
view posts, I couldn't find it in the Help.

Needs work. Meanwhile I'll continue with ProNews/2 for OS/2 because
I've yet to find anything better.

One of the ballyhooed features of Usenetic states it does not download
headers, when opening a newsgroup. The XOVER overview headers contain
the References needed for threading. No XOVER headers means no
possibility of threading based on References.

gnus within emacs works in a shell. For a GUI equivalent, gnus in
xemacs under X Windows. Both are strictly for the power user, IMHO.

Pan is another GUI newsreader which will run under X Windows.

That would be my guess. It certainly does not improve the experience
of participating in text based newsgroups. Judging from the screen
shots provided at https://www.usenetic.com, the news agent is quite
cheaply querying as few headers as it can, to get by.

I will note, any newsreader which functions under macOS 10.13.x, will
run under macOS 10.14.x. How much of a performance hit they'll see is
a complete unknown at this time. macOS 10.15.x may be a quite
different can of worms.

it's known to those who are running mojave beta, either public beta or
developer.

since newsreaders are not cpu intensive, it's highly unlikely that a
performance hit, if any, would even be noticeable.

it is. 32 bit apps will not run at all and some 64 bit apps may have
issues.

In theory, yes. In practice, I haven't seen any difference in
performance from 32 bit apps, but there are still enough of them (and
low-level ones) that I am pretty sure the entire 32-bit API is being
loaded pretty much at start, and that's where I'd expect to see the
biggest hit.

The oddest warnings are those for purely CLI utilities, like fortune.
Not sure what's going on there, but it may just be flagging anything
that is not specifically 54 bit, is in my $HOME, and is a binary
executable?

matter. A cleaver had weight. It had purpose. A sword might have a certain
nobility about it, unless it was the one belonging for example to Nobby, which
relied on rust to hold it together, but what a cleaver had was a tremendous
ability to cut things up.

Dear friends:
For me, Crossover works perfect. And I don't need to pay any
Ms-Windows license, or to declare an NTFS virtual or real partition to
compete with my APFS (Mac) hard disk space.

Yep. Your Name, as usual, is talking a bunch of bullshit.

I use WINE to play Call of Duty 4 weekly, and aside from a very
occasional app crash, it's highly reliable and performs extremely well,
all things considered. My ping is only 10 or so milliseconds higher than
playing it as a native macOS app, and believe it or not, it is actually
*more* *stable* than the native macOS app on this Mac Pro. : )

Same here, as well as larger programs, including demanding FPS games.
Works great. Your Name is full of shit.

Unison worked fine for me (in an admittedly brief trial) on the latest
Mojave public beta. I have NOT tried it on binary groups though
(which is/was supposedly one of its strong points).

A few weeks ago I moved my Photos library to Dropbox. Ever since,
every time I open Photos it displays the new-user screen ("What's
New in Photos") and a link to "Get Started".

Clicking on "Get Started" would be expected to open a tutorial on
the new features but it doesn't; it takes the user straight to
Photos. So it's not a big deal, just one extra click, but I'd like
to get rid of this nuisance.

Any suggestions?

Use a newsreader that lets you start a new thread?

Fucked up, didn't I?

Since I'm getting no help here, I think I will start a new thread.
