As a long-time PageMaker user, I am tired of working around its
limitations in preparing scholarly publications, i.e., its lack of
footnoting capabilities. When I used PageMaker in such a publication,
I had to manually position footnotes through a chapter, and hope that
the author did not find another obscure reference to footnote. [Never
worked, though, this is the University of Chicago, after all. There
are never enough footnotes!!!! :-) ]

So I am wondering what my options are? I have used MS-Word
extensively. It is creative in allowing me to position footnotes
(bottom of page, directly below the text, at end of document (=file),
and at the end of a section (if the file has more than one section)).
Word also allows me to create composite characters, i.e., the Semitic
h with dots and rockers under it, etc. It also has style sheets which
come in very handy when a design change has to be implemented in the
document. But it is not perfect either. Headers and Footers are not
dynamic, that is changing with the section titles on a particular
page.

I am asking for your gripes and compliments about Ventura and
QuarkExpress. Will the product(s) allow me to do the kind of work
outlined above? If you have used both, or a different product, what is
your preference when working on a book length publication?

I am working on a IIci, System 7.0, with 20 megs of RAM, so the
ability to work under Virtual Memory is a necessity. I am about to
order more HD space, so that is not a problem.

Thanking you in advance...
