In Netscape 7, how can I avoid automatic repeated sending the same
messages to newsgroups?

Even though I only press the Send button once, my messages to newsgroups
lately tend to be sent three or more times in quick succession.

I'm using Netscape 7 and OS 10.4.11.

My God, why?

I use Thunderbird and don't have this problem.

People still use Netscape?

A very timely question. See today's announcement.

Even Netscape is telling people to switch to Firefox.

Not for much longer. As of this February, AOL will stop supporting
Netscape. AOL is recommending that all Netscape users switch to Firefox.

That's just great. I can't access my bank accounts through Firefox (or
Safari, for that matter), while I can with Netscape.

Are you absolutely sure that the newest version of Firefox won't do that
for you? The reason I ask is that the State of Nevada, in their infinite
wisdom, supports Explorer and Netscape. Firefox substitutes adequately
for Netscape on their site. If your bank does not do this, raise hell or
get another bank.

I just read in the paper this morning that Netscape will cease support
and development on February 1. Wonder if anybody will notice.

I had that problem when Safari first appeared, but not with the last two
upgrades. I moved from Netscape 7.1 to Firefox/Thunderbird during the
current year and have no problems. Sounds from my experience like you
are talking about older versions: are you sure you have tried the most
recent ones?

Of course not; however, if a security vulnerability is found and not
fixed, then continuing to use Netscape brings a risk that many people
should not incur.

And you also shouldn't drive a car whose turn signal is failing. But
that's not the same as claiming that it doesn't run.

I am running the latest version of all three, but now that you mention
it I haven't retried accessing the accounts from Safari or Firefox under
the new versions.

I never used NS 7, but rather the Mozilla Suite, 1.7. (I think it was
the same code, just with NS branding and some AOL additions.) SeaMonkey
is a drop-in replacement, currently at version 1.1.7. This would have
been Mozilla Suite 1.8.1/NS 7.1, I suppose. I don't think running the
old news component is too dangerous, but if you use the browser, there
have been a lot of fixes since MS1.7/NS 7.
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#seamonkey1.1.7>

SM uses the same core Gecko code as FF/TB and is fully current as far as
security fixes. It just continues the suite format with its more advanced
set of preferences. As I recall, when I went from MS to SM, I got a nice
performance boost too as far as web page rendering. SM will pick up your
NS profile and use it. You might wish to back it up though, because once
you use newer software against a profile, you should not run the old stuff
against it.

As to repeated messages, I've not experienced it to any degree under MS
or SM. Might be a function of your news server?

As to a bank not accepting FF, they may be (incredibly stOOpidly)
sniffing the browser User Agent string and only looking for IE & NS.
A UA switching extension such as Prefbar might be a solution, although
you certainly should complain to any entity which refuses browsers based
simply on UA. Refer them to http://geckoisgecko.org/ .

Happy New Year all!

Thanks, Mr. Uh Clem.

Is Sea Monkey better than Thunderbird?

I switched months ago from Mail to Thunderbird, and I've gotten
accustomed to using Thunderbird, so I don't want to have to switch again
(from Thundrbird to Sea Monkey).

And by the way, you have an odd name.

Sea Monkey is a direct successor to Netscape 7 and has the same combined
web browser, mail client, news client, web designer capabilities,
whereas Thunderbird is just a mail and news client. It's no better at
news and mail, but for anyone who's accustomed to Netscape's features
set and wants to keep those features all in one program, it's the way to
go.
