How can I get Photoshop CC to stop closing files automatically?

Lately, when I press on the red circle at the top, left corner of a
Photoshop file to close the file, any open, saved Photoshop files
automatically close, and that didn't happen before.

Why are pressing on the red circle/button in the top left corner?

That has nothing to do with the file, that will close the Photoshop
window and subsequently any open files in that window.
You are effectively closing the PS window without entering a save
dialog. (that is if you haven't done a save before closing that window)
if you do that you basically have PS running without a window open
where an active file can reside.

You don't quit PS by closing the window. If you were thinking that you
were moving the open PS window to the dock without closing any files,
then you should click on the "orange" circle/button(the middle one) not
the "red" one.

If you want to close the file then you would click on the "x" on the
left of the tab label.

Tom Evans:
Your open files manifest themselves as tabs within the window that you
are closing with the red gumdrop. The only purpose of the red gumdrop
is to close all open files simultaneously, provided that they have been
saved (if they have been changed); you no doubt know that Photoshop
will not permit you to close a changed and unsaved file without a
warning.

To move between tabs, press CTRL-Tab or Cmd-`(that's the accent grave).

Each of the tabs has an "X" at its left side. To close a single photo
you may click the X or, with the file you want to close in the
foreground, type Cmd-W, or select File > Close from the "File" menu.
File > Close All is the menu equivalent of the red gumdrop.

Thanks, Davoud and Savage.

I've been confused about this red dot clicking in Photoshop since
upgrading recently to Creative Cloud from version 5.1. In previous
versions of Photoshop (before tabs) clicking on the red dot closed only
the file whose red dot one clicked on.

Also, this new behaviour of Photoshop is inconsistent with clicking on
the red dot in the top, left corner of browser windows; in browsers,
doing so closes only the file whose red dot one clicks on. So that,
too has confused me since upgrading to Creative Cloud.

Also, this new behaviour is inconsistent within the Creative Cloud
programs; in Photoshop and Indesign, clicking the red circle closes all
open, saved files -- but in Dreamweaver, it closes only the top file,
so that also has confused me and should be made consistent by Adobe.

Anyway, thantks, Davoud and Savage, for the tips. I'll remember now to
click on the tiny, black "x" to the left of the tab title to close an
open, saved file.
