Delrina's Far Side Daily Planner 3.0 for Windows and Macintosh
is now available at most major software retailers such as Egghead,
Computer City, Software Etc, and CompuAdd. Or you can order it
over the phone from Egghead at 1-800-EGGHEAD. SRP is $59 US.
Street price is $39 to $49. Current users can get the new Far
Side III theme pack for $19.95 and the new version of the Daily
Planner for $10.00 for a total package of $29.95. This deal can
be ordered direct from us at 1-800-395-1546.

The Daily Planner uses a notebook metaphor to organize calendars,
lists and contacts. It was designed to provide a rich feature set
with broad appeal that is easy to access and use. It has excellent
support for people that use a paper-based personal organizer like
DayRunner or Filofax.

New features for 3.0 include:

o An address book. Users can specify either personal or
business contacts. Includes space for four phone numbers.

o A "Find" feature. Search for any item in the current Daily
Planner file. Search criteria include item type (event item,
list item, or contact), a text string, a date range, and a
variety of item attributes like category, priority, and status.
Double-click on any entry in the list of found items and the
Daily Planner takes you right to it.

o Print templates. A wide variety of templates are pre-defined
for use with all of the most popular personal organizer
formats. In addition, templates can be copied, modified, or
deleted as desired. The new template editor features
"Template Preview," which shows how the chosen print options
affect the template being edited.

o Print preview. Shows exactly how the print template and
date range chosen will be printed.

o Import and export of data. Ascii text, WinFax phonebooks,
and native Daily Planner formats are currently supported.
Use the native format to archive old entries in a Daily
Planner file.

o Sorting order. Day events and list items can now be sorted on
any of the item attributes. For example, you can sort list
items by priority and then by status or vice versa. (Time
events are always sorted by time and contacts are always sorted
alphabetically.)

o Enhanced month view. Text can be displayed in each day of
month view. In addition, complete schedule information is
displayed in a "Detail Window" when a particular day is
selected.

o Batch delete. Allows criteria-based purging of a Daily Planner
file.

o Ability to serve as a WinFax phonebook. Using this feature
lets you keep your address book in the Daily Planner, but
access it from WinFax.

o The Far Side! Another year's worth of daily cartoons and a
new set of animations. All animations and one cartoon per
week are in color.

Other features include:

o Time events. Time events include a starting time and an
optional ending time. A special "time slider" control makes
time-shifting a breeze.

o Day events. Ever been frustrated by a PIM that requires a
starting time for Christmas? Use our day events for holidays,
vacations, conferences, or any event that doesn't have or
need a starting time. Day events can span multiple days and
repeat if desired.

o Repeating events. Using our remarkably easy-to-use editor,
you can specify an enormous variety of recurring events. Or
just pick a type from our list of common patterns. And we
always describe your choices in English for you so there's
no confusion about when your event will occur.

o Alarms. You can attach an alarm to any event. The alarm can
be set to go off minutes, hours, days, weeks, or even months
in advance of the actual event. The Daily Planner has a
selection of alarm sounds built in, or you can use any of your
favorite .wav or Macintosh sounds.

o Snooze. When an alarm goes off, you can simply hit the Snooze
button and the Daily Planner will reset the alarm automatically
to go off again after the indicated delay. The Daily Planner
will suggest an intelligent delay, but you can change it if you
prefer.

o Drag-and-drop rescheduling. You probably spend as much time
reworking your schedule as you do creating it in the first place.
With our drag-and-drop feature, rescheduling is a snap.

o Print Quick. From the menu or the toolbar, this command will
print the current view without prompting or displaying a dialog
box. The template used to print the view is the same template
last chosen to print that view. (In other words, the Daily
Planner remembers what template you like to use to print each
view, and selects it without asking when you press the Print
Quick button.)

o Most commonly used features available from an optional toolbar.

o Undo. A single level of undo allows you to change your mind
without a lot of hassle.

o Font control. Specify any of your installed fonts for either
the display or printing (via print templates). Four different
fonts can be used for the display and as many as six different
fonts for printing.

o Filter feature. This controls which items are actually displayed,
printed, imported, exported, or searched for in the Daily Planner
file, based on the item attributes of category, calendar, priority,
and status.

o Calendars. Calendars allow you to manage resources, whether
it is a person or an object (a conference room, for example).
It's actually just one of several item attributes you can specify
(like category and priority). For example, a family might set
up calendars for each member within the same Daily Planner
file, or a secretary could set up calendars for each of the
bosses he schedules. The nice thing about this model is that
any number of calendars can be created within a single file
(you might want to think of them as "accounts") and using
the Filter feature you can control which of them are actually
displayed at any one time.

o Extensive options for controlling the way each view is displayed.
You can also specify whether the week begins on a Sunday or Monday,
and you can have the Daily Planner open up in the same view each
time you use it, or remember the last view you were in and open
the notebook to it. In addition, the Daily Planner remembers its
window size and position each time it is used.

o High quality sampled sound effects. These are used to reinforce
the notebook metaphor and may be disabled if preferred.

o True ease-of-use. One-button access to most commands through the
toolbar; double-click support for many common tasks like creating
new items, switching themes, or "zooming in" on a view; and drag-
and-drop rescheduling combine to make this product truly simple
and satisfying to use.

o Windows and Macintosh versions share a common file format. This
allows users on a network to access the same Daily Planner file
regardless of whether they are Windows or Macintosh users.
(The Daily Planner does not support simultaneous write access
however.)

As someone mentioned the Far Side Daily Planner, I just thought I would
note that if you buy an Apple Macintosh (from an academic reseller) from
November 1st through January 28th you should receive bundled software
that includes the following :

(I can't find my flyer so I'll have to do this from memory)

The Far Side Daily Planner (Not sure which version)
After Dark
Managing Your Money
Retreive It!
(A mis-remembered drawing package)
Spectre (a Game)

Just can't remember... There are probably other things

Anyway, the flyer I had claims that the bundle is worth like $560
Anyone purchasing a Mac from their campus store should probably ask
about the availability of the bundle. You can never have enough
software to play with! (esp. "Free" software )

Gee, I can't wait until the Internet loses its government funding in a
couple of years and goes 100% commercial. I guess it will be just like
Prodigy then. I want my old Internet back!!!

... for matter of information, the Far Side Daily Planner _does_ look
nice. HOWEVER, it takes something like 10-12 MEGABYTES of space on the
harddrive. In addition to that, it has an INIT to warn you of your
appointments. Whew... it's BIG.

Check it out at a store before you buy it... it makes a sizable dent.

The disk space requirement is due to the theme pack (The Far Side),
which consists of 366 daily cartoons (52 of which are in color) and
approximately 20 or so color animations. The Daily Planner alone
requires less than 1 Mb of disk space. The theme pack does not
have to be installed in order to use the Daily Planner.

If disk space is a problem, the Install program for the theme pack is
easy to use and lets you install (or remove) the theme pack one or
more months at a time. A one-month supply of the theme pack is less
than 1 Mb.

This is disappointing. One of the things I really liked about the previous
version of Delrina Daily Planner was that I did not have to load an
extension just for alarm notifications.

I tend to keep the calendar open in the background and having to risk the
incompatabilities of yet another extension just doesn't sit well. This is
not a gripe with DDP specifically, but almost all appointment systems. I
would prefer to have the application be capable of generating its own
notifications (through the Notification Manager), or a small "alarm"
application that works in concert with the parent application that can be
left open in the background.

Michael, why did Delrina choose an extension over the previous application
generated alarm method? Did the app grow too big to leave open, or is my
opinion on extension avoidance a market minority?

Exactly my thinking when I created "Right On Time", available on sumex-aim.
It also consumes very little RAM and very little disk space...

(sorry for the shameless plug)
