I'm running 9.1 on my old 6100/60/72. As far as I know it can't run 9.2.

I had a 6115 and I am pretty sure I had OS 9 on it at one point but I
wouldn't swear.
Good luck

everything works but it is *very* slow
Exactly correct. 9.1 is the end of the (supprted) line for anything
that isn't OS X compatible. Anything from the 7.1.2 that shipped with
them up to that is runnable on the NuBus PowerMacs, although without
upgrades some of the low-end ones can be pretty sluggish. Cache in
particular makes a world of difference on the 6100/60.

I've noticed that the most important upgrade is RAM.

RAM is very important. Cache (which I mentioned but you snipped)
happens to be an especially interesting kind of RAM.

The highest POSSIBLE OS is 9.1, though it's not realistic--your 6100 is very,
very slow by today's standards.
My experience is that the highest REALISTIC OS is 8.1, and even that's very
slow when compared with a more modern computer.

It is - when compared with my new G4/867.

In my experience there is no noticeable difference between 8.1, 9.1 - or
even 7.2.3. It is still slow. But the most important is how much RAM is
available - I've got 72 M RAM [but 640 RAM on the new one].
