My faithful companion, iMovie appears to have developed an allergic
reaction to Firewire, or at least that is what the suggestion seems to
be on the iMovie discussion board at Apple. So, how does one "fix" a
Firewire problem? I've tried a new cable (Monster, at that), plugging my
DV camera into both firewire ports in the back of my system, powering
everything off and then back on and plugging in again. At my wits end,
to say the least.

Problem description: audio drops out on a regular basis, every 2-3
seconds when capturing movie from my camera. Video drops out, but less
frequently.

System and related accessories: Dual processor (800MHz) G4, OS X 10.2.5,
iMovie 3.0.2, 1.2 GB RAM. Camera is Canon GL-1.

I have used this setup (with iMovie 2.x.x) earlier without problems.

Any suggestions?

Have you fired up the process viewer? You might find
something competing for resources there. Also look in
the system logs for errors. See if you can turn off
any services you may have on such as printer and file
sharing.

Daniel, fired up process viewer and watched as video streamed into
iMovie. With only iMovie running, nothing else appeared to be competing
for system resources. iMovie itself varied from 5% CPU time to ~60% CPU
time while I watched. Figure this is normal or close to it, because I
then started Netscape while capturing. Still saw nothing that came close
to stressing CPU utilization, at least as I read it.

There are a total of 44 processes running as I write this, iMovie is
still running and dropping audio and video for no apparent reason.
Nothing besides iMovie, Netscape and the process viewer are shown as
grabbing CPU or memory resources.

I looked at the logs and the only thing I could find that appears to be
related to iMovie I found in the console log and are copied below:

2003-05-01 21:51:29.798 iMovie[1050] Font GB18030Bitmap: in
_readBasicMetricsForSize, claims 0 max advance but is fixed-pitch.
May 1 21:52:03 Michael-Gilmores-Computer last message repeated 3 times

(this appears several times in the console log.) I also found this,
which may have something to do with it if DV means digital video.

DVLib_InitializeLibraryX didn't find /Local/Library/DVFamily.bundle.
GetCFBundleFunction: Didn't find the CF bundle for
DVFamilyCallbackShim.bundle.
GetCFBundleFunction: Didn't find the CF bundle for
DVFamilyCallbackShim.bundle.
DVLib_InitializeLibraryX found and loaded DVFamily.bundle.

I haven't used that particular camera, but I have heard that there are
issues with Canon cameras and firewire device control.

Yes, :) & some questions.

1. Did iMovie work Ok before, did the problem 'evolve' gradually or suddenly
(if suddenly, what did you install around that time?)
2. have you run Disk First Aid and fixed disk permissions ?
3. Isn't there a higher version of iMovie 3 ? Maybe worth installing.
4. have you installed any third party iMovie apps that might be causing a
conflict?
5. have you changed any of your camera's internal settings ? eg: 12 bit / 16
bit

Apart from the above all I can suggest is re-installing it. your projects
should be safe

I have used this camera for three other projects without fail. I wrote
to Canon and all they had to say, basically, was good luck, ain't our fault!

It worked fine before. The only thing I installed before the problem
suddenly came up was 10.2.5 and iMovie 3.0.2

According to Disk First Aid, it runs automatically when the system is
started from my boot disk and everything is fine on the boot disk. I may
start from another disk and run it just to verify that, thanks.

Not as far as I know, 3.0.2 is the latest.

No.

No.

Tried that, problem remains after reinstalling.
