All,
I have a G4 AGP (Sawtooth) and want to put a DVD burner in it to use iDVD to
create films. Having searched USENET I can only be sure that the Pioneer A0x
series of drives are compatible with iDVD. Does anyone know of any other
brands/models that will work easily with iDVD? Reason being is that there
are a lot more readily available and quite frankly cheaper drives than the
Pioneers (I know the price/quality thing but I'm not gonna be using this a
hell of a lot so this shouldn't be an issue) and I would like to try and use
one of these.
Any help massively appreciated.
Cheers in advance
Si.

I'm pretty sure just about any model will work, as long
as it's internally mounted, as opposed to external.

Unfortunately not, check out www.xlr8yourmac.com and the drive
compatability databases. The Pioneer A0x series and the OEM DVR-10x
series are the most compatible. There are a few other drives that will
work patched under 10.2 and I think there is a patch for 10.3 for some
drives but haven't got round to testing it yet.

Personally I've got a Sony DWU-14 [1] which out of the box doesn't work
with iDVD or iTunes/Finder etc, fortunately I have Toast plus the
original drive in the second bay.

set as per factory installation.

What kind of prices are you seeing for the Pioneers and for the other brands?

Concerning external drives, an easter egg has been discovered in iDVD 4
that allows burning to external drives or the creation of a .dmg file
for burning on another machine! Check out this weblink for more
information and a tiny (below 1KB) download!
