That's strange, cause QuickTime 5 is buggy. It cannot play microtonals
right, and can easily choke machines with less memory. It also has
problems with Ram Doubler.
Make sure that for whatever configuration you are using for QT, you have
installed _exactly_ all the supporting files for that OS. Any other
combo, trying to play in OSX with _classic_ QuickTime installed or
anything else such, will fail. It will also fail if you have done a
partial install, on QT 6, where some older QT files are used.
If you use QT in classic emulation, you need to have installed the
_classic_ support files as well.
Perform a clean full install and install exactly all the supporting
files that the current QT uses for that OS.

What is Mind? No Matter.
What is Matter? Never Mind.
I run the MacLab at my son'e school. We have a number of 5400s (OS7.61,
Quicktime 5.0.2) and a few 5500s (OS8.1, QT 5.0.2). The 5500s play midi
files without problems, but the 5440s won't.
Several people have offered suggestions, but nothing helped. I wish I had
a solution.
Searching on Google came up with several references suggesting that QT5
has problems with Midi. The consensus seems to be a timing problem with
the Musical Instruments component.
