here is a semi-inside trick to get an iPhone but avoid (most) of AT&T's
fees...

there is a second trick within the bottom link, that shows that simply
removing the Sim card with a (straight pin) will free you of AT&T's
network, then it's just a pure 802.11 widescreen iPod, Safari, and Mail
machine.... very cool!

-------

We've heard some talk from people who are still interested in getting an
iPhone but don't want to commit to a 2-year contract with AT&T. Remember
that before the iDay, there were rumors that users with bad credit might
be able to get iPhones and activate them on a prepaid GoPhone plan? That
has turned out to be true. Users who have bad credit or have fraud
alerts on their credit reports have been able to "fail" the credit check
involved when activating a new iPhone, and therefore have been able to
use them with GoPhone plans.

But what if you don't want to ruin your credit or place a fraud rating
on your account? If you buy an iPhone from an Apple Store (not an AT&T
store, where they will attempt to run the credit check right there in
the store), you can take the phone home and perform a credit check from
the comfort of your La-Z-Boy. That's when you use the tips posted by our
friends at TUAW about how to effectively "fail" the credit check: enter
999-99-9999 as your social security number when asked during activation.
This will boot you into GoPhone mode, where you'll be able to select a
prepaid plan instead of a contract.

When I posted about a Linux tablet PC that could be used as a WiFi
phone, you guys rejected it because it wasn't a cellar phone... and
now you're going to use an iPhone, with none of the abilities of the
tablet PC... as a WiFi phone?!!!???

I don't think that iPhone can be used as a "WiFi phone", whatever that
is.

You mean as an answer to what an "WiFi phone" is, not how it relates
to the iPhone?

poor edwin, never keeps up with the times. the iPhone sure as HELL can
be used as a WiFi phone. Let's see... it has WiFi (802.11g to be exact)
and it's a PHONE, so it's only a matter of a few weeks before it's a
full fledged WiFi Phone.

My sim card is now out... It works just fine without any connection to
AT&T, so using it as a pure WiFi phone is just a software question, the
iPhone certainly is open to use it as such.

I device with a phone form factor is much more likely to be used as a phone
than is one with a different form factor, say that of a tablet PC. It
simply is more practical.

I think he means as a VoIP "phone". I do not believe the iPhone allows
that, though if it did it would certainly be more convenient to use that
than, say, using a device with a tablet form factor.

I said that's how you were going to be using it. You must have
something broken in your head to respond as you did above.

That the way I said you were proposing to use it.

You'd have to be an idiot to buy an iPhone and use it that way.
