(Reuters) - Apple Inc's iPhone outsold all smartphones in the United
States in July, its first full month on sale, accounting for 1.8 percent
of all U.S. mobile handset sales, research group iSuppli said on Tuesday.
ISuppli reiterated its forecast that Apple would sell 4.5 million
iPhones this year, rising to more than 30 million in 2011.
The two models of the iPhone on the market sold more than Research in
Motion's Blackberry series, the entire Palm portfolio and any individual
smartphone model from Motorola, Nokia or Samsung.
ISuppli classifies the iPhone as a crossover phone that competes with
both smartphones, which have personal computer-like functions such as
e-mail, and feature phones, which have extras such as cameras and music
players.
"While iSuppli has not collected historical information on this topic,
it's likely that the speed of the iPhone's rise to competitive dominance
in its segment is unprecedented in the history of the mobile-handset
market," iSuppli said.
"Apple achieved this in the face of numerous, well-entrenched
competitors."
Most buyers of iPhones in the United States in July were male, under 35
and had a college degree, iSuppli said.
A quarter of those who bought an iPhone switched to operator AT&T, which
has an exclusive service agreement for the iPhone in the United States.
The iPhone will go on sale in Europe later this year.
> rising to more than 30 million in 2011.
Apple thinks iPhone sales will last 4 more years? I predict it may last 6
months to a year...but someone will trump it LONG before 4 years is up and
the Yuppie class will move on! They've NEVER had a phone that lasted a
year since dropping the Startacs and standard battery packs!

Yes, Edwin. 1.8% of *all* cell phones sold in the U.S. in July were
iPhones. So?
Pardon me: So what relevance do you think that fact has?

No, it's an estimate based on a survey says that 1.8% of all cell

Are you claiming that a survey of 2 million is not statistically

Do you even know how survey's are done and evaluated?

How does the answer to that question change the fact this is only an

No Larry, you have no idea of how all of this works.
Apple has 200+ patents on the iPhone, so no matter WHAT... Apple will
have the lead for 17 years or so... Apple is the outsider with far
better engineering talent than any Cell Phone company has, so Apple
completely eliminated the "cell upgrade" cycle with a SINGLE product.
Ouch!
Now anyone that gets an iPhone will have years and years of service
without upgrading, changing the battery, etc. They killed the "throw
away cell phone with one fell swoop!"
Apple builds the best cell phones on the planet and that's just a fact
the Cell Industry needs to learn.
It might take them 6 months to 4 years to understand, but when Apple
"enters" a "market"... all competitors die off rather quickly.
Apple did this with the mini and mainframe market in the early 80's, did
it again to the publishing industry, did it again with the MP3 market,
and now you are seeing them wipe out the Cell Phone Industry as we "knew
it", 65 days ago.
Apple will KILL off RIM, MOT, Symbian, Nokia, Samsung... they just don't
have the talent to compete against OSX inside a Phone.
-
Apple is a Disruptive Company, A modern day Business Volcano.
From the day of it's creation Apple has been a disruptive force in any
market it touched. The Apple II disrupted the computer industry by
creating a personal computer the average citizen could use. The Mac was
extremely disruptive in that it allowed the rest of us to actually be
productive and creative without having to fully understand how computers
work.
The iPod disrupted the music industry big time. Now comes the iPhone
doing the same thing to the cellphone industry.
Every time Apple enters a market they turn well established, profitable
business models into obsolete mush. And the big players don't like it
one bit.
Now the cellphone industry has been seriously disrupted and players are
scurrying around like rodents trying to figure out what to do next.
This a VERY GOOD thing.
-
You think a survey is insignificant since it suits your purpose, to
bash, and of course the answer doesn't fit your preconceived idea that
Apple stuff of any kind is crap.
Survey's are a tool of Market Research and are valuable tools to look at
trends.

Can you directly edit a spreadsheet on any other phone? nope! not really.
The iPhone is a high powered communication device that has already
changed the world... in 65 days! a new Apple record!
You are talking about very old "apple //" concepts, "a spreadsheet" if
it had any value would be updated through Ruby on Rails, AJAX or PHP, so
your iPhone would display the latest info every time.
A "spreadsheet" is like the postit note of the 90's.
Get with the program!
Yes, really.

So you agree that your entertainment only iphone isn't really suitable
for business use?
Changed the world? Give it a rest oxford. It's a smart phone that isn't
particularly smart, nor, by most every report, it isn't even a very good
phone.
It's got a good screen, and a great web browser. Big whoop. Otherwise my
Nokia S60 is a better smart phone.

You clearly don't use an iPhone day to day do you? I do and have a
non-biased report on the actual device.
If you don't have an iPhone, there is no way you can comment on this
subject.

Actually, in real world use. The iPhone is like touching all data that
is connected to the planet, it's pretty cool once you start using it.
Far better screen resolution than the Nokia, they don't even have
anything in their future labs remotely close to it. At this point, Nokia
is a gonner I'm afraid. Can you say Sperry?

The Apple // created the first spreadsheet, that's a fact. Hard to say
what the first killer app on the iPhone will be, but it's assured nobody
else will have access to it since they don't have access to quality cell
phone hardware.

Yeah, I can. Used it... It's useless for my needs. It'd be a cool toy,
but beyond that, what's the use? Without the ability to add
applications, it's useless.

Probably the first killer iPhone app was the hack that actually let
you install APPS on it!

Wow- less than 2% of the market, despite spending a large fortune on viral
advertising during the time period. For Apple, that kind of market share
would be huge.
In the mean time, not a single AT&T commercial features the iPhone and a
random survey of AT&T retailers shows that it falls well down the list of
recommended devices when not asked for specifically.
BTW- for Apple to sell 4.5 million phones with a 1.8% market share (as the
article implies), every cellular user in the US would have to replace their
phone between now and the year. Not likely.

Apple will trump it, just like they topped every version of the iPod.
Unlike many other companies, they understand that they'd better be the
ones who supersede their own best-selling products, like the way the
replaced the iPod mini with the iPod nano.

getting around 2% in less than 60 days is pretty remarkable. then
outselling all other smartphones "combined", bodes well for them to get
10-15% in 1.5 years.
AT&T clearly isn't allowed to advertise the iPhone, so not sure why you
made that comment.
Ah, we are talking about "smartphones", plus you are forgetting about

Yep- scrolling to the bottom of a post and clicking there to move the

I usually post from my WinMo phone using QMail, like I'm doing now,
(which also "forces" one to top post, BTW) but I generally use OE

I nevr really noticed or cared. While I don't top post very often,
IMO it's a style choice. I tend not to particularly care which
method someone uses if they have something useful to say.
Personally, I prefer posting inline.

I always find it interesting when someone complains about screen size
and resolution on modern smartphones. Sure it isn't a 1084x768 17"
display, but 320x240 and 640x480 were both desktop standards not too
many years sgo. I find Excel no more difficult to use on my PPC
screen than Lotus 1-2-3 or Multiplan were on my ancient CGA displays
years ago.
A PDA/smartphone is a technological Swiss Army Knife. A very useful
collection of tools in a compact, easy to carry package. Sure, any
one of those tools pales in comparison to it's full-sized/full-
featured equivalent, but that's hardly the point, is it? No one
who's ever used the screwdriver or scissors on a Swiss Army knife
prefered it over using a real screwdriver or a real pair of scissors.
The point is that I essentially have the most important capabilities
of a low-end laptop in a device the size of a deck of cards, and,
more importantly, like the knife, I have it EVERYWHERE, unlike a pair
of scissors, screwdriver, or a laptop!
Unlike a prior poster, I won't claim you can't possibly use your
iPhone for business- but I'll guess that your business uses do not
require much more than e-mail, web access and telephony. If so,
fine. But some of us need more, and need it even when the cell
network is unavailable (docs.google.com? Google Maps? Surrre...)
That's why I find the iPhone so disappointing. It's an impressive
piece of hardware hampered by an extremely foolish (greedy?) business
plan. Third-party developers have done amazing things with the iPod.
If given "official" access to the iPhone, these and other 3rd-party
developers would've likely already turned the iPhone into a real
business-class device that'd give RIM, Symbian and MS a run for their
money. As it stands now, it's an iPod phone with webtablet, (and a
darn spiffy one!) A tremendous waste of excellent equipment.

so it's a GeniusPhone? or as people are starting to call it, the

It's definitely smarter than any of the "smartphones" currently being
marketed. It's brilliant for sure, perhaps it deserves of higher class
of its own? is that what you are trying to say?

well sure, it could be a bit higher, but I think 10-15% is about right
for the "smartphone" market in the 36 month timeframe.

doesn't require a citation, Apple does not allow others to advertise the
iPhone. sounds like you don't know much about Apple, is that correct?

Perhaps you have never heard of Christmas? Apple sold 21.1 million iPods
during the 2006 holiday season. It will sell around 33 million this
year, so it's a no brainer Apple will sell around 6.5 million iPhones in
that period alone. So 10 million sounds about right.

too funny!

As long as you edit properly, I see no difference. I care
to actually READ the content and what is being said. Not how it
is posted.
If someone were to actually ignore what is being posted
or laugh at it simply because of something so goddam trivial, it is
not my problem - it is entirely theirs.

Answer: Because people don't communicate that way.
Question: Why should you not top post on usenet?
by the way.... LOVED your website!
its technological sophistication about knocked me out!

So you can't create a website, check.

you're a newbie, check.
ness_net has been plonked, check.

I see he is from Tacoma WA, one of the most backwards technological
states in the nation, so it figures.

But you will need to keep up on the iPhone news since at some point
Verizon will also be allowed to sell the iPhone. It might be 2 more
years, but you'll get a chance in time.
So don't be so bitter until then. Okay?

Since I generally trim and post inline, I have to move my cursor
anyway.
As "evil" as many believe top-posting is, I much prefer it to bottom-
posters that can't be bothered to trim a single line from a 20-post
thread!

That's one way to look at it. Here's another:
Answer: Because you just read what is being replied to in the last
half-dozen posts...

As does your ability to edit or even view those documents when you
wander out of wi-fi and cellular range...
I wouldn't brag about the iPhone's ability to use web-based services
when it only illustates what on-board services it lacks. It's like
saying an FM radio is superior to an iPod because the radio's "random
playlist" is infinite! ;-)

Actually, more like 2 years, as I recall. The last Powerbooks and iBooks
used G4 processors, made by Freestyle (OK, that wasn't Moto, it was spun
off by Moto).

Good point... yeah, I was thinking of the G5's only being made by IBM.
and yes, Freescale/MOT is basically the same thing. I stand corrected.

Now you're changing the measure- a sign of someone finding themself on

What a crock. Those reporters need to find another job and quit lying and
shilling for Apple. I especially like the fact they admit "they (i.e.
iSuppli) have not collected historical information on this topic" too.
The Nokia 1100 was the best selling phone of all time at 200 MILLION units.
That's more than twice the number of iPods and Playstation 2 units sold
combined - and then some. Apple with 4.5 million phones is a drop in the
bucket to the 1100 phone. Lasts and is still in use for years. I doubt
very much if the iPhone will last that long. Apple's sheep will flock to
the next model in a couple of years.
Remember the Mac "Cube?"

sorry for your confusion, but I never implied 10-15% of the entire cell
phone market. look up at the thread title, does it saying anything about
basic cell phones? nope! you made a mental mistake, case closed.

incorrect, the iPhone is only sold through 2 channels. Apple/ATT, and
ATT cannot advertise the iPhone outside of their store. That's a fact.

Um- no. Your words, "getting around 2% in less than 60 days is pretty
remarkable. then
outselling all other smartphones "combined", bodes well for them to get
10-15% in 1.5 years."

Citation? The lack of a citation would indicate that the stories of
AT&T purposely playing down the phone in their stores is much more
factual.

You haven't posted an independent fact in the thread, iother than the
original article. Everything is prefaced by "it's a no-brainer" and "I
think" and other less -than-factual prefaces.

but that was a cheap, throw away cell phone while the iPhone is more

your numbers are way off. there have been 109 million ipods sold, so you
need to subtract out all the playstations 2's add 9 million, then
subtract 200 million, so the cheap nokia phone has sold 81 million more,
big whoop!

but the nokia 1100 isn't in the same league as the iPhone, you are
talking about a cheap "cell phone" compared to a full featured
"smartphone".

yes, total "smartphone" marketshare. if you misread that, AND the title
of this thread, i'm sorry, but I certainly didn't intend for you to
understand it that way.
"10-15% total smartphone marketshare" in 1.5 years. Is that easier for
you to comprehend? hope so.

A fact like this doesn't need a cite, "common knowledge" of how Apple
operates is plenty enough to cover it.

Except the iPhone ISN'T a smartphone.
Not really, I said *directly* on the iphone the same as you can do on a
smartphone. Many businesses don't allow third parts such as Google to be
involved.

No it's not. A tiny laptop runs any program its operating system
supports and has STORAGE to put things in. The iPhone has neither, ON
PURPOSE, so you are totally dependent on the SUPPLIER who you must be
constantly tethered to, and paying of course, to make it functional.
Notice its firewire/USB ports to tie the external hard drive to so you
can onload/offload data/pictures/movies/stuff to/from? NOT! A tiny
laptop has plenty of ports to offload/onload with.
iPhone is a Blackberry with a touch screen.....SERVER based to make the
carrier money.....
Remember back when we were all supposed to give up our massive hard drive
PCs and use an appliance that amounted to a Java Computer where all our
data and programs were stored on a SERVER BASED system so we could be
constantly charged, over and over, for access to the data and use of the
programs? JAVA was the answer to all our problems....remember? Remember
when the users rebelled and "Just Said NO" to this scam? Is iPhone the
reincarnation to this off-site, server-based, soak 'em constantly, scam?
I can see that....can't you?

I don't find myself agreeing with Oxford many times, but you're just
wrong here. They have 2% and he thinks they may get 10-15% in 1.5
years. Nothing about changing the scope of the percentage there.

are we talking about 2 different iPhones? Mine has 8GB of storage and I
can store all kinda of information in there. notes, emails, webpages,
maps, phone numbers, voice mail, addressbook, stock prices, movies,
music, photos, pdf's, excel files, word docs, etc. just like my laptop.
hum. I guess your iPhone is broken?

what? everyone's iPhone can do that, why can't yours?
> iPhone is a Blackberry with a touch screen.....SERVER based to make the

no, it's not server based, unless you call voice mail server based, but
all phones work that way. everything else I store IN the phone.

no, you just don't know how the iPhone operates.
funny stuff Larry, got any more ignorance to share?
according to the definition it sure is:
Smartphone features tend to include Internet access, e-mail access,
scheduling software, built-in camera, contact management, accelerometers
and some navigation software as well as occasionally the ability to read
business documents in a variety of formats such as PDF and Microsoft
Office.
yep, it's a smart phone!
You're obviously confused here. Do you really OWN an iPhone? Without
being connected to the web, which *IS* server based, what can you do
with it beyond what every other phone can do?
Listen to music? My Nokia S60 can do that. Including OGG, which he
iPhone can't play
Look at pictures... My Nokia S60 can do that.
Watch Movies... My Nokia S60 can do that. Including Divx, Mpeg4, etc...
Make a phone call... My Nokia S60 can do that. But it has superior call
quality VS the iPhone. Which is more important to me.
Now, what else can my S60 do, that your iPhone can't?
Well, I have my checkbook in there http://tinyurl.com/2t2yhr
with a $50 sirfIII bluetooth GPS, and a free download of smart2go, I
have a fairly decent GPS app http://tinyurl.com/2n333c Or I could buy an
app from Tomtom, or Garmin to do the same thing. Can't do that with an
iPhone without being tethered to the web. Which is VERY impractical for
the type of trips I take(I tend to stay off the beaten path on my
motorcycle)

Um, he's explaining it PERFECTLY.
What is an iPhone without a web 2.0 server? It's a touch screen ipod
with a mediocre phone attached to it. Without hacking it, you can't add
any new functionality to it without being tethered to the web.

Yes, I own several, and the iPhone is no more "server based" than any
Laptop... and that is the point.
> Listen to music? My Nokia S60 can do that. Including OGG, which he

But not through an easy to use interface. Nobody but fools want OGG, a
wretched format.
> Look at pictures... My Nokia S60 can do that.
Not as clearly or as big as I can on my iPhone, nor can it sync as easy
as it does with iPhoto. Nor can it zoom in, zoom out of an image. Nokia
SUCKS when it comes to graphics.
> Watch Movies... My Nokia S60 can do that. Including Divx, Mpeg4, etc...
Not as clearly or as big as I can on my iPhone, nor can it sync as easy
as it does with Handbreak, VisualHub and countless others. Plus the
battery life on the iPhone is about double the Nokia.

GPS will come to the iPhone in the same way.

No he is not since he CLEARLY doesn't have an iPhone, neither do you.
You have an old fashioned Nokia, nobody wants one of those "dinosaurs"
after the iPhone appeared.

Actually it's a Multitouch screen, the Nokia doesn't have that. Call
quality is the same and you can add anything you want to the iPhone.
Sounds like you aren't keeping up with modern day developments.
Face it Steve, you got stuck with a sucky Nokia phone and are JEALOUS of
iPhone users. You'll get one in time, don't fret!

The problem with the PDAs is that they try to be everything for
everybody.
I refused to look at 40 field spreadsheets on my Treo. The Word to Go
was cumbersome (text editing with the tiny keyboard was a really
inefficient use of my time).
Laptop is so much faster and a much better use of my time. Iget the
feeling that some people's work up here is primarily reading
spreadsheets and Word docs while travelling. If so, you probably do need
something that is designed to read these docs.
I own a pretty busy design company, and where some of it is managerial,
the iPhone's ease of use and functions greatly simplified my life.

To reply by email, remove the word "space"
Let's see, ssh, ftp, Apache, BitchX, Perl, Ruby, Python.
Then there's a downright excellent NES emulator for games (along with other
native games), plenty of file management tools, the ability to send or email
any file on the device (and yes that can include Office documents), a
command line that any 'nix user would love.
To compare the iPhone to "every other phone" is just plain silly.
It's not just a phone, it's a computing device running one of the most
comprehensive OS's I have ever seen on a mobile device. With all of the
modding I have done my iPhone is still 10x more stable than my Palm OS
Treo--and any WinMob device I've owned too.
I could go on and on, but this is only the beginning...

My Treo played music too. Guess what? Barely used it. The iPhone's wonderful
iTunes integration changed that.

So what? So could every phone I've owned since 2002. Doesn't mean it they
did it as well as my iPhone. Fact is they didn't.

See above. And pixels count.

I have zero issues with call quality. In fact it is greatly improved over
the Treo I used for the last 2 years.

I could list more, but your mind appears closed...

Since when did 1.5 years = 36 months?

Really? So go somewhere with no wifi access or cell phone access and
tell us this<eye roll> You're stuck with an ipod at that point.

Yeah, who would want a smaller, better sounding format... <eye roll>

Yes I can zoom in and out. No, I don't have as big of a screen. Nor do I
want a device that large and fragile.

ROFLMAO! You can go a week with your iphone without a charge? That
sounds highly optimistic.

Um no.. But keep telling yourself that.

Nor do I want it.

No, it's not. The Nokia is superior in call quality.

No, you can't. You cannot add applications to the iphone. You can RUN
web 2.0 apps on it. But without hacking it, you're stuck.

No, I am. I'm just not the rabbid fanboi that

If I wanted an iPhone, I'd have one. It's too fragile, can't change the
battery myself, no GPS, No expense tracking, etc...

11:12 am: "But we want to get even more aggressive with this. Take a look at
the iPhone. You know, the surveys are in: the customer satisfaction numbers
on the iPhone are off the charts. They're higher from iPhone owners than any
Apple product. Ever. They LOVE them. We want to make the iPhone even MORE
affordable for even more people."
"So we're going to do something about that today. We're on track to ship our
1 millionth iPhone this month -- to get ready for the holidays here's what
we're going to do. It's clear customers want the 8GB model -- it's not going
to sell for 599 anymore."
"Starting today effective immediately, we're pricing it at just $399." (HUGE
applause.)
