Nice. But if that one doesn't fly, the Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. is sure to.
They will be REAL computer tablets not toy etch-a-sketch wannabees..
LOL. Apple will sell more iPads than all of those me-too offerings
combined.
The Windows/Linux/Android challenge that you are failing to understand
is that Apple's competition is fractured while Apple is offering a
unified, known target for ISVs to optimize and sell into.
Apple was the only game in town last year and is doing gangbusters now.
LOL. Apple will sell more iPads than all of those me-too offerings
combined.
The fly in the ointment is they won't be me-too. They will be real
computers.
LOL
You mean you'll declare them to be "real".

I think the general public will see them as "real". With "real" usb ports.
"Real" sd card readers. A real" CPU, and best of all, a "real" OS.

Care to make a wager?
Make sure you have a third party hold the cash, to prevent the loser
from welching.
-hh
After each has been out a year, let's count the sales... :)
Something tells me that Apple will sell more than Dell, HP and Lenovo
combined in this market space.

The 'general public' doesn't now, nor will in the future, give a shit if
it is a 'real computer' by your definition.

The problem with most Mac users is; they think they know more than the
other 97% of computer users. Pretty sad if you think about it.

This general public? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4MwTvtyrUQ
Good luck with that. I'm sure those people are really going to care
about specs they don't even understand.
You guys are so far out of touch with mainstream users it's not even
funny.

"The game of professional investment is intolerably boring and over-exacting to
anyone who is entirely exempt from the gambling instinct; whilst he who has it

And when it comes to the little things, like iPods, iPhones, and now the
iPad, they are right on the money.
You keep telling everyone why it isn't a 'real computer' when in
reality, Joe Sixpack doesn't even care about all those things that you
think are so important.
And while I think those things are very important in a laptop or
desktop, they are of little interest in handheld devices. Here it is
how simple is it to operate, can I do it with minimal learning curve,
does it look good? Those are all questions the iPad answers quite well
and the desktop/laptop/netbok doesn't.
There are far more people that don't care about computers, don't want to
learn about them, don't hook crap up to them and so forth, than all the
geeks in the world.
--
Lloyd
I can see that. But when the "299 tablet comes out, Joe Sixpack will stand
up and take notice. And you can bet the $299 tablet will be here very soon.
And you can bet it will do more, better, for less.
One thing they are sure to understand is price.
> You guys are so far out of touch with mainstream users it's not even
> funny.
You guys are so out of touch with reality it's amazing.
Price becomes less important every year. When the x86 tower you wanted
cost $1500 and the Mac tower you wanted cost $2500, that was real money.
But $299 vs. $499? If the more expensive device is actually more
compelling, well, an extra $200 is lot less than $1000.
[snip]
And will be missing the part that is more important, yet dismissed by
you and others - SOFTWARE! Not just any old software either, software
that actually benefits from touch. That has been missing for the last
10 years of touch computing.

I volunteer to hold the money. Send cash please!
You mean like these awesome apps?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/05/ipad-apps-utilities-you-need/
A level? A level on a device with a curved back. Bwhahaha
Pick what you'd like to make a pathetic point. A point the market won't
notice, and in a few months you'll either own one or be out of luck.
Or maybe just using one of those ducky new all windows pads with the
short battery life, running an OS not meant for touch and doing apps
that aren't any better at it.
Or you could just buy one similar right now and join the crowd of the
dismal failure products.

Lloyd
What did you have in mind?
>snip the stupid shit.
I saw a touchscreen Toshiba three years ago and it seemed to work great.
Most smartphones have touchscreen. Apple isn't the only game in town, and
technology moves forward at a rapid pace.
Look at the economy. Look at the unemployment rate. Perhaps to you and me
$200 is chump change - but not to the majority.
Technology moves faster than your grammar.
It should have been "Most smartphones have touchscreens."
Over the last 10 years it seems like someone would have thought about
putting Windows on tablet. I'm sure they would have been selling like
gangbusters.....
Yeah I guess Microsoft knowing so much more about mobile devices is
why Windows Mobile is outselling the iPhone and why the Zune is
crushing the iPod.....
How well have Windows based tablets sold over the past decade?
Hell, I've got an HP Touchsmart now and it isn't anything to crow about
IF you take off the music reader software I use it for. It ain't the
hardware that has kept touch screens from selling bub.
--
Lloyd
Great. Every restaurant uses them for POS systems. Every hospital,
every warehouse, etc. They just don't need to be on the cover of
Newsweek.
Well why didn't you buy an Apple touchscreen PC that runs your music
reader software?
Now I hear ya.
Do you mean to say, a huge company like MS can't write better software than
ANYBODY?
If the answer is no - then they should start firing some asses.
.
I would have to say; Much better than the Newton.
It's a dead horse, Son.
As good as the Newton you think? Or better?
Touch apps are not coming from MS to the general market, or at least
none that make you go 'wow!' or even much less. In this case, the
software I use is from a small company and works quite well.
--
Lloyd
You really don't know how relatively small the field services industry
is do you?
You mean it's doing well compared to a product that has been
discontinued for well over a decade -- if that's not damning with
feint praise....
Yeah, I bet if Apple tried selling a PDA device now and integrate with
a phone it may have a chance of outselling Windows Mobile.....
Nice question, the answer is that Apple doesn't think much of the
desktop touchscreen market, and with good reason - it's a dud!
Apple touchscreen stuff was too small when I was looking. Now that the
iPad is out, it is coming to it. It will still be a bit small for my
eyes for this task, but some will find it of value.
BTW, the software does in fact run on both Windows and OSX.

Lloyd
or on any desktops in the general marketplace it seems.

There's so much that Pratt-fall doesn't know, K. How can one begin to
catalog it?

Yeah it's tiny. There are barely any restaurants in the country. Same
for warehouses and hospitals.
10 years ago you guys said the Newton was a magical and revolutionary
product that would change the face of computing.....
You guys are so mean I'm gonna cry.
So now you're going to find a quote from any of "us" where we said
that, right?
No you dumb asses say it about every Apple product. Do your own
homework lazy ass liberal.
It's doing much better than a failed product. Therefore it must be a
success.
It was touted as that. But none of the Freaks on this group said that.
Other Freaks on a different group did as I recall.
You seem to have a problem on staying on topic. Bad habit. I feel fatigued
now. I have to get up in the dark tomorrow.

In a world where some silly number of Americans spend $90+ per month on
cable TV -- probably most of them even when they're unemployed -- I'm
not sure I agree. Or, rather, yes, there are probably a bunch of people
who shouldn't spend the extra money, but that won't stop them.

"The game of professional investment is intolerably boring and over-exacting to

So the Newton you brought up -- a 10 year old discontinued product --
is somehow relevant.
Hey zara, Why do you have to get at 0 dark 30 tomorrow? Welfare offices don't
open 'till at least 8:00 AM. Do you live that far out in the swamps that it
will take you 3-4 hours to get to the nearest county relief office? I
thought so.
If you read what it said, then you deidn't understand what was said. I
also note that Sturgeon is promoting his own theory, but no one else does.
Another failed troll.
Yeah - it always amazes me that some people without a pot to piss in, piss
away money on useless shit.
You are the one who introduced tablets into the conversation. So that makes
the failed Newton very relevant. Do you lose your thought train that
quickly?
Not really. In technology, 10 years is ancient history.

Is KDT your sock???!!! You had me fooled!
Lloyd, what is your music software called?
MusicReader. Read about it and get a fully functional bitchware version
from http://musicreader.net ! (note: the bitching isn't as bad now as
it used to be).
The iPad version is expected, with luck, by sometime next week. But is
will only be a somewhat limited version of the full reader part. You
need a pc or mac to convert pdfs or scans to its propietary file format.
It really is quite good.
