Thanks for pointing out many people consider a Dell computer worthy to
give as a Christmas gift.

It would appear those such yourself who so often call these machines
cheap junk are sadly mistaken.

The existence of a Dell gift card shows that?

they're misguided - not mistaken.
They'll find out the hard way when they try to do a restore and the
"restore partition" is corrupted and Dell was too cheap to provide DVDs.

You can order DVDs when you order the system. Or make them yourself

You mean the extra $1.00 it costs to create a DVD in bulk?

And WHY, should you have to pay for those DVD's OR have to make them yourself?

The answer: Dell's are CHEAP computers. It's what happens when your business model is based on volume, not quality first.

You don't think you are paying for them when you get them for "free"
with a system?

If you want to play that game, let's compare Mac memory prices with
reality.

BTW I priced out a couple of random Dell systems and I didn't get an
option to pay for an OS disk so I assume one comes with the system.

You do, but you're not insulted by having to purchase an add-on for something so trivial in cost.

What's next for Dell? Making users purchase their own power cords?

This is what happens when you sell with the volume model and have to consistently trim costs to make any profit. That
has been the way of the Windows PC.

I'm not sure where the $20 cost came from, but it appears they will
send you one set for free:

It seems to be only Dell PCs bought at retail stores (i.e. Wal*Mart,
Staples) that do not come with OS discs.

Dell Inspiron -- upgrade from 3GB -> 4GB DDR2 800Mhz (this is even
after you choose the Core 2 Duo with a 1066Mhz FSB) - $40

Apple MacBook -- upgrade from 2GB -> 4GB DDR3 1066Mhz - $100 ($50 GB)

So for 20% more per gigabyte you get RAM that is 33% faster.

Mac memory, being the same DDR chips as PC memory, costs the same - unless,
of course, one, as an individual, is stupid enough to buy it from Apple.
Understand that Apple, like Dell and other PC builders offer upgrades and
build options to those who need to either buy their computers fully
configured to begin with (usually because they are financing the purchase
with a loan), or need to purchase after-sales upgrades from an already
qualified (by the corporate purchasing system) vendor. Apple and others
charge a premium for this. But also understand that there are hundreds of
alternatives to purchasing memory from the computer maker and in this case,
the prices are the same for the same memory.

You're also buying more of it with that upgrade. Going from 2 to 4 Gb instead
of from 3 to 4. I do agree, however, that Apple has always been quite
niggardly with their base DRAM and have always been behind the rest of the
industry with regard to what ships in the basic configuration.
