John
Wow, it takes Apple months to come up with a product and a strategy
and now you manage to put them right in five minutes with a few simple
words that could fit on a stamp!
Forget the lessons of the iPod, forget the record sales of the Mac,
just go and stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap! Why didn't Jobs think
of that.
Slade is acknowledging iPhone is a device with real innovation,
technological interest, and which people really want.
He just reduced the reason most people didn't buy one to price alone.
That should be carefully read by all those insisting it's about a
battery, a single wireless rate, or third-party software.
Slade (one of the better of them) suggests it's not.
Thank you for explaining Slade's theories on the iPhone to me, that
was very helpful.
However, while I know he has his moments, but this certainly wasn't
one of them.
Excellent post John. See, this is why I have never been tempted
to kill-file you. I KNOW you have brain in there. Well said.
But please add to that the fact that many of we veterans of the
'bleeding edge' are not in the least interested any anything in
its initial release due to new products ALWAYS have problems. It
is called 'The 1.0 Syndrome' and I personally am tired of it. I'm
saving up for my super-deluxe iPhone, but the NEXT model that has
the kinks worked out and has better Internet speed (aka 3G
capability). Meanwhile I still kick around with my good old
reliable Palm IIIc for years ago ('the other half of my brain')
as well as a separate cheap cell phone. I have a special small
bag where I keep both of them that I can sling over my shoulder
along with my laptop bag.
Some day my iPhone will come...

Fortune Magazine 11-29-05: What's your computer setup today?
Frederick Brooks: I happily use a Macintosh. It's not been
equalled for ease of use, and I want my computer to be a tool,
not a challenge.

He spearheaded the movement to modernize computer software
engineering in 1975.]
Someday his "prince" will "come" also.
Some? Try most. I mean.. it's the cost of a PS3 80GB model and it's for one
user. At least with the PS3 multiple people can enjoy it, it'll play blu-ray
movies.. etc.
Gimme a T-Mobile Dash, a Blackberry... hell.. even a SIDEKICK over that for
the money.

The System Has Failed
Combine the costs of the other smart phone and an iPod... which for many
people is the gold standard of portable music players. It is also not a
matter of what features a smart phone has, but what features a user is
likely to be able to easily use... from what I have seen and read the iPhone
is one of the easiest to use of similar devices. Again, that may very well
make it worth it.
For many it may very well make sense to buy an iPhone... though please note
*I* have no plans on buying one in the foreseeable future.

"If you have integrity, nothing else matters." - Alan Simpson
I want an 80GB iPod.. not an 8GB one that happens to make phone calls..
IOW, you're yet another Apple Fan Boy who only pays Apple lip service.
I *did* just order a new iMac... it fits my needs (and wants). The iPhone
does not. I have no problem with that. Heck, the only reason I own an iPod
is it came with the iMac... otherwise I doubt I would have one. I also have
no AppleTV or many other Apple products. I have no obligation to buy things
I do not need.
None of that goes against what I said: for many the iPhone seems a very good
purchase, I am just not one of those "many".
