Sony Vaio C1 Battery/Charging question

I have a laptop. It's about 1 year old. I use it between office and home and
there is a power cable at each location. i.e. It's used constantly with
mains power.

It's been run on battery about 4-5 times in the 12 months I have had it. The
battery 'wear', charge and power levels have always been nominal - no
fluctuations. it shows wear as 100% as when I bought it. It shows 21
recharge events. And until today 100% charged.

Now it's indicating as empty - no charge. time to charge 'power on'
0hrs00mins
time to charge 'power off' 0.00 time to 'empty' on suspend 0.00

Physically my laptop lights are indicating that it is being charged i.e. it
being charged from mains power but it does not seem to be taking charge on.

The battery checker also shows it to be 'clean' it tells me that it's
capacity 'to be charged' is at the same level as when it was bought it.

I'm stumped - is it just dead? These batteries are pretty expensive and it's
gonna bug me if I only ever got about 30 mins worth of working time from a
battery!?
