Thinking about upgrading my Thinkpad 701c to Win95..

Does win95 support the pcmcia controller that IBM uses??

Any other points that I should be aware of??

Thanks in advance.

Michael,

I run Win 95 on a TP 701 quite successfully. You will need several upgrade/fixes from
IBM's FTP/Web site. The URL is:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/searchfiles.html

At this web page enter "701" as your search criteria and review the "readme" .txt files.
IBM also has an upgrade to Win 95 page at their site with a lot of FAQ's.

You're going to need to download an "upgrade prep", a BIOS update, and a few driver and
program updates including ESS 688 audio upgrades and a new version of Faxworks. If you
have Lotus Screen Cam, this will no longer work, and you'll need an upgrade to Screen
Cam 96 from Lotus.

I have not used PCMCIA cards in my 701. I understand that Win 95 does not support the
original IBM PCMCIA controller. My Win 95 "Device Manager" showed a conflict in PCMCIA
which I allowed Win 95 to correct. Everything has been fine since, though as I said, I
have not used cards in my machine, so I can't say as to how well they work. I believe
the IBM card controller will still be on your machine though, and can be run as a 16 bit
stand alone program.

For more on this issue, try contacting E.P. Brown at the "Laptop Central" web site. He
recently upgraded his 701 to W95 and may be able to help re: PCMCIA use.

Best of Luck. E-mail me if I can help.

I believe that IBM touts the majority of their Thinkpad line as being
Win95 approved or MS "Logo-compliant". Check out the following URL:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/support/tpcw95.html

This is IBM's Win95 upgrade/support page.

I own the TP-701C and had no trouble at all installing Win95. I first
applied the latest flash BIOS (from above site) then installed Win95.
Pretty much picked up everything at the get-go. Following are some of
my observations in point form:

- I swap in a 10MB flash card and a 3Com ethernet adapter in the
PCMCIA slots and they're recognized with no trouble
- the Mulitport adapter is viewed by Win95 as a 'docking station' and
appears in your Start Menu.
- IR worked fine until I clobbered it with my second serial port
(thanks a *lot* Fabian!) 8^) this is a config thing that is
easily reversed

That's all I can think of at the moment. Hope that helps.

I installed Windows 95 within the last 2 weeks with no unresolvable
problems (slight prob getting my PC Card drive to be recognized).
Modem and sound work fine, so I'm surprised there's mention of a sound
drivers upgrade. Checking the IBM Windows 95 upgrade page for
Thinkpads, I only see mentioned the 2 files I used, the setup disk and
the latest BIOS (which I already had).
I'm currently quite pleased with it's performance, as I mentioned
on my web pages in this month's editorial. If 95 didn't require so
many resources, I'd agree that it's the perfect laptop OS.
