Hi - I just bought an IBM 310-ed thinkpad with a 166mmx pent and 32 mb ram
and was wondering if anyone out there plays games on their laptops and was
looking for suggestions - I have lots of games and tried them on the system
and the processor and ram are fine for them but its the display that looks
off when trying to run Quake2 etc , I have a decked out desktop system with
PII and Voodoo2 3d cards and AGP port and all that and dont expect it to
look anything like that but was looking for suggestions on games even if old
ones for playign on a laptop- such as would old RPG games go well - or
possible games such as Civ 2 or maybe the original Doom? any suggestions
would be appreciated here or by email

Well, I tried Warcraft II, it looks and plays great, but the scrolling is way
too fast for me. Mostly I play Ultima Online...which requires a 133Mhz, 16MB
Ram, and 500+ MB hard drive space for full install. Works betther than on my
desktop...plus I much prefer looking at a TFT screen than a CRT. The usual
Windows supplied games (gamepacks 1 thru 4) seem to work pretty well. I couldn't
get Tomb Raider to run for some reason. Myst and Riven run fine and look great.
I've never had much success getting older Ultimas (DOS based) to run on any
Windows computer.Guess I needed archaichly small drivers for mouse etc, to
minimize usage of that 640k ram space.
Oh, I've got a WinBook XL 233MHz w/ 32 MB Ram. The older (more expensive ..
haha) one with the tillamook chip.

Get SciTech's Display Doctor (www.scitechsoft.com) and install it. Quake
should then be able to operate at your laptop's preferred resolution.

If your machine is DSTN or HPA, the games will almost always look
awful....I have
an active matrix (TFT) screen on my laptop (166, 32Mb, etc...) and games like
doom
and quake look great!! If the refresh rate is too slow, any shoot-em-up games
will dull
in comparison with your CRT........TFT is the way to go if you want to play
games.

As long as you have a TFT screen, your'e OK. I have F22 Raptor 2 on my
166mmx 380ed. It plays great.
