I am looking to buy a second-hand Toshiba laptop, on the basis that they
seem to be the most well built and reliable. Firstly, is that true, and
secondly, is there anywhere on the internet, perhaps a personal homepage,
that lists all the previous Toshiba models? Toshiba's own site only lists
the current range, and I am unsure what models had what specification in the
past.

On a more general note, I am totally unaware of the compatibility or
otherwise of laptop hard-drives and memory. Do they all have common
external dimensions, and a common interface? Laptops are often sold without
hard-drive or memory, or come it is too small for modern applications.

I think you'll find you're wrong there...
go to www.toshiba.co.uk/computers/ click on support then bulletin board, you
have to register for the bulletin board but only an ID & password , once
you're registered you can view the spec, file updates, drivers etc. for
almost all tosh laptops.

Generally, Any model ending with a T such as 400CDT, 780CDT etc, has a TFT
screen

Any model has a letter D in the model number like 400CDT or 780CDT has
internal CD. Almost none of the Portege series has int. CD except for an old
660CDT model.

RAM total varies depending how old the model is. It's safe to say if you get
a model within last couple of years you can go at least 144MB.

Toshiba makes 4 series:
Tecra Top of the line, robust, network friendly, full docking solutions,
targeted for corp. use, expensive
Portege Subnotebook, slim, lightweight, no internal CD, expensive
Satellite Pro Main stream notebook, suits most people
Satellite Cheap price, still pretty good quality but low on
performance and feature sets comparing to others

Very helpful. Didn't know it was there. However, you still have to know
what you are looking for, so can anyone give a brief rundown on the stages
in their development?

For example,
in what model was a TFT colour screen introduced?

Which range or model numbers have an integral CD Rom?

Go to http://computers.toshiba.co.uk
Follow the links to Products
Select Portables in the left-hand menu bar.
Then choose the Discontinued option.

Fairly complete information for most of their previous models is available
(although only since they started using names - e.g. Satellite, Portege -
none of the T19xx, for example, are there).

Hope this helps.
