HP Omnibook 4150 Com port problems

I recently purchased a OB 4150 that someone had updated to W2K. The USB and
Com ports did not work until I updated the bios. The USB seems to work fine
now, but seem to still be having problems with the com port. The device
manager says it is Com 1 and "is working properly", but is isn't working for
some of the things I need to do. For example I use the serial connection to
update the firmware in a software defined Ham radio, my desktop works fine
for this, but the laptop won't, doesn't seem to recognize the port. It did
work ok for the software program that controls the radio from the computer
(laptop). Any ideas?

the device manager has the following info:
under ports: Com 1
modems: 3Com modem card - Com 3
USB to serial adapter - Com 4
