nonsense... SXGA+ on the Inspiron 7500 (1400x1050) is wonderful, and i'll
never settle for less unless i need the portability...

good recommendation for a bottom line resolution with today's laptops...
Some of the resolutions/color depths offer by SVGA:
640x480 65,536, 16M colors
800x600 256, 64K, 16M colors
1024x768 256, 64K, 16M colors
1280x1024 256, 64K, 16M colors
1600x1400 256, 64K, 16M colors
and I've not kept up on what else.
SVGA may be accelerated or not. In new or recently new machines, probably
accelerated.
XGA was IBM's tag for the extended grraphics system which came in some PS/2
machines and was at some point offered in an add-in card (Micro Channel
only?) for PS/2 clones.
XGA was initially 640x480x65,536 colors, but I think eventually reached
1024x768x65,536 colors or maybe 16M colors. I think. Gee, I can't remember
anymore and my references are all at work.
However, you have to know in what context the terms are being used. In
fact, I would not go on the terms and assume any standard definition, but
get the specifics, the screen horizontal/vertical resolutions, color
depths, and retrace frequencies (for use with an external connected CRT
monitor) and ignore whether the manufacturer, salesman, called it SVGA,
XGA, SXGA, or whatever.
Sincerely,
Marc Warden
