I am using the HP Pavilion zd7010us, and it is a great machine. I use it as my primary computer, and it has dealt WELL with
everything I have thrown at it. The built in Wifi is very good, it beats out my D-Link PC-Card hands down. The wide screen is
nice for when you need to have two windows open side by side. Speaking of dual windows, the extending of a desktop to a second
monitor works well. Over the last couple of years, I have picked up a number of USB devices, and this laptop gives you 4 USB 2.0
ports. The IrDA works well for my portable printer, and my Palm Tungsten|T. The writes to the 'Digital Media' slot on my SD card
works perfect. I listen to music while I work, and the built in sound is fine (no it is not audiofile quality but for listening
while I work it is fine).
And of course as you say the separate numeric keypad is nice to <vbg>.
There are a couple of 'cons' to this machine;
1. Set to maximum performance, the battery is only good for 1.5 hours
(not enough for a regular DVD).
2. Because of the size of the machine, finding bags that will carry it is hard.
3. The power supply is bulky.
I do want to give kudos to HP for designing a true desktop replacement.
If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

Yes the numeric keypad is definitely a "must-have" ;-)
Almost perfect for me despite a little noisy as you can imagine since it has
a desktop processor... (fan always on but that's not so bad since it's not
very loud and you can forget it even by late night - better than "come on,
come off - in my advice)
Mine is the 7012ea (P4@2.6 Ghz with DVD+RW and without wifi) used for
graphic design. It is rather "cold", and can became a little warmer and
little more noisy when CPU is used intensively. You should perhaps avoid
frequencies >2.6 Ghz if you like a relative silence, autonomy and cold
keyboad... and want to have chances to use it without trouble this summer
(very hot now in europe - my last Asus L3 with P4 desktop 2Ghz, with poor
designed thermal dissipation, was throttling at half the frequency during
the most hottest days - but it was far hotter than the HP, anyway) ;-)
Such a shame it doesn't exists at these days, with a P-M... I would have
been totally happy !

I will try and make this funny story quick. I was reformatting my drive in
the computer room .. hadn't done it much before and I was sort of unsure of
myself.
So I am calling out questions to my boyfriend in the other room .. should I
do this ?? should I answer "yes" etc etc .. and so on.
Doing ok and then it asked, do I want FAT32 or NTFS .. Hmmmm I don't know
... So I yell to my boyfriend, "do I want NTFS or FAT32 [he may as well have
done all this himself] and he answered "yes" so I said "yes what ?? NTFS or
FAT32 .. ?" He said "uh-huh !!!" So I get up and open the door to the
bedroom and say "very funny .. now which is it?" He open his eyes and said
.. "which is WHAT ? what are you talking about ..."
End of story .. My African Grey parrot had been answering all my questions
while my boyfriend was sleeping. I tell everyone now who wants to reformat
that I will get my parrot to do it !! [of course, until it comes to NTFS or
FAT32 .. they will have to make that decision,]

No, I think it will be an annoyance... The best solution is to take one that
doesn't get warm as mine (2.6Ghz) and not more (I think the 3.2Ghz must run
very hot).

I depends wich model you'll buy. DVD recording is cool if you need archiving
big stuffs or make some DVD movies.
The drive is NTFS formatted and since it comes with XP (CD bootable) so you
really don't need a floppy disk neither.

Really ? It seems, HP have done a great job with the thermel disipation,
so...
First, I was a little affraid with mine but it stays rather cold even on
high (and long) CPU load in a "hot" room... Surprisingly without to much fan
noise neither ;-)
