Connecting notebook to workstation (NT)

Hello to all experts in the field!

I am trying to connect a notebook to a workstation (PC). Both are equiped
with Windows NT 4.0, although the Service Pack on the notebook is version
3.0 while the workstation's hat SP 4.0.

I am using a cable connecting two serial ports (the cable is definetely
suitable).

I istalled the needed protocols and RAS-Services, but when trying to connect
I in either way always get an error message saying, that one of the machines
does indeed support PPP but not the protocoll requested...(something like
that...).

Can anyone tell me, which tricks have to be applied besides the more or less
complicated setting up and starting of services and protocols?

Someone would be really happy...!!
