Hi all

A few weeks ago my Thinkpad T60 has been behaving strangely, the Desktop
freezes, the icons are not clickable, the quick start bar also freezes, to
regainnormal control I have to perform Ctrl-Alt-Del for taskmanager, in
this way I can get back to having a desktop that works. The point is that I
have to do it many times every hour.
What can be the problem?

Thanks

Regards

A good starting point would be to work out whether it's a hardware
or software problem - boot into Safe Mode and see whether it still
happens there.

Ok thank you

In safe mode without a network, Desktop not freezing, but in normal mode
for not to complicate things I have not described another problem:
Open the Chrome browser, open tabs, when switch from one tab to another,
with the mouse pointer, click on the tab, but the tab closes.
and this also happens in safe mode over network, but Desktop not freezes
really strange this thing

Maybe the mouse signals are getting mixed up and it thinks that's a
middle-click. Does the same problem happen in Chrome when using a
USB mouse? If not, you might want to try disabling the driver for
the touchpad/trackpoint in Device Manager and see if that fixes the
freezing problem as well. You could also disabling the touchpad
and trackpoint in the BIOS settings.

The desktop not freezing in Safe Mode could suggest that it's a
driver problem, or it may be a hardware fault with the
touchpad/trackpoint causing it to send signals that confuse the
driver and make it hang when not in safe mode.

I believe the maximum memory that a T60 can take is around 4GB. I
presume you are running windows since you've mentioned above that you a
"Ctrl + Alt + Del", so are you running a 32-bit version of windows or
64?

I'm asking that since Chrome is a memory hog and as far as I know
they're not serving any 32 bit versions anymore. So if you are running a
64 bit machine then that will just tax your machine more.

Have you considered running either Linux or BSD? Maybe running those will help
you prolong the life of that T60 for a few more years.

Yes, Thinkpad 32bit
Yes I'm trying these days to install a linux distro like arch32 or voidlinux
or lubuntu18.10/xubuntu18.10
I think it becomes lightning

Why not try NetBSD? It's still supporting 32-bit installs. I don't think
it's a good idea to use an unsupported version of a Linux distro
especially if you are using it to browse the web.
