But where can I find one? I am talking about the old ibm type thinkpad. I
have a regular lenovo laptop now and it's a piece of crap.

You're surprised? Not only are you asking about shopping in a country
that few readers of this low-volume newsgroup have likely ever
visited, but you seem to be after an older model, so even an official
stockist likely won't have what you're after (or maybe you're
looking for the anniversary edition Thinkpad, which would likely be
a special order, if any are still available new).

Of course there's Ebay, where some sellers in other countries may
be willing to send orders to the Philippines if there isn't
anything local for sale. Perhaps there's a filipino website
that's more popular there than Ebay, like TaoBao is in China.
But presumably you've thought of these things yourself.

(My handle changes) No, but thanks for the suggestions. I am only trying
to find a laptop at about $1000 USD that is not a piece of cheap junk,
like 99% of the laptops in my present city (philippines).

I have visited every computer store here and have yet to find a laptop
that has good reviews. I don't want to spend months of my time setting up
a machine that will fail in a year or two. That's why I thought of the
thinkpad, even though its way heavy. I want a real computer not a piece
of comsumer junk.

Problem with your suggestions is the shipping-risk of damage, loss, theft
and customs extortion, so if I go that route I have to make sure it's
reliable. I am doubtful ebay, or amazon, etc are reliable-too many
complaints from consumers who have been burned (old sold as new,
damaged/incomplete in shipping, not shipped,etc).

I will have to go to Manila probably to find what I want and then I will
have a problem if the item goes bad.

What is the anniversary edition of thinkpad? What is lenova doing with
the model name? slapping it on it's junk cheap machines for example?

Yes buying online is a risk for sure, perhaps you have computer
markets over there, though they're dying off here in Australia.
They have the same dodgy sellers as on Ebay, but at least you can
try them out first and avoid the risks of shipping. It sounds like
you'd want to find someone selling off a batch of ex-business
laptops. Even then though, they'll probably be newer then the IBM
era.

The Toughbook might be another option:

https://www.pcmag.com/review/356599/lenovo-thinkpad-25-anniversary-edition

It's designed to incorporate old Thinkpad features dropped since the
IBM days, but I doubt that they actually upped the build quality. I
don't know though, I've only seen the pictures.

Hi!

I'm surprised that someone mentioned this in here. I buy a lot of
Thinkpads from a lot of places in Manila. But for the most part I get my
stuff from Gilmore. There are also people who sell their old junk on
Facebook Marketplace. Don't search for thinkpads though as people often
label theirs as Lenovo though the really old ones are labelled as IBM.

Cheers!
