> So, I recently found out that there is indeed some functional
difference between an IEEE 1284 printer cable and its older look-alike,
decidedly cheaper ancestor. Since they have the same connectors and
APPARENTLY the same number of connected wires at each end, what the heck
is the DIFFERENCE that commands a premium price for the certified
version? And why does it work differently?

This a question that most OS/2 workstation users could have answered
when Release 2.0 came out. The older cables are not always fully
populated - specifically, the line used for the printer to signal
"Ready" isn't there. OS/2 was the first PC OS to use this line rather
than poll the printer.

That's why there is PAR1284.SYS for OS/2 :)
The version I have in my \os2\boot directory is dated Jan 2000,
I can remember using it over a decade ago with I think an OKI printer,
with a normal parallel cable but as I use a USB printer under OS/2
now, my ancient HP deskjet 9300, the details are lost in history.
