I would like to install an OS besides Windows NT4, but am having troubles.
I can get Redhat 6.2 to install but it doesn't recognize the multiple CPU's
Does anyone know of any linux / unix like OS's that will work well.

Welcome to reality. No one wandts to write the Linux drivers to support
C-Bus II SMP for Linux. I've asked Alan Cox, and I think the words
'dead' and 'dinosaur' came up. No amount of begging, pleading, and
grovelling has produced any volunteers; there has been some discussion
of attempting bribery. NT4 and the SMP varaints of OS/2 will run on
this machine. Maybe AIX? IIRC, some versions of Novell supported it
also, but that's probably not what you want.
Three 720's? You lucky dog. I had two in the house at one time, but
only one was a working machine. It's still here, still in service.

Thanks for the info. The server 720's that I have also have PCI slots, lots
of 'em.
However, I think it also uses an MCA "bridge" to make them work.
I never thought of AIX. Is it available for non RISC / RS6000 machines?

Yep. I haven't actually plugged anything PCI into mine yet.

That's the big card right above the RAM card.

They had versions that ran on PS/2 and PC machines. There are a couple
of gurus floating around here, I would expect them to check in on the
subject soon.

Hope this is some help.
UNIX:
There are files on IBM's PC Server 720 about SCO Unixware, that it supports
SMP - it has a list of different OpenServer version, and files to download
(to support SMP?) - there were "DISKS" for versions 5.0.0 and 5.0.2 . There
was also something entitled "Corollary Supplement for SCO v5.30".
Netware:
It has a mention of Netware 4.1 SMP - there is a "NOS Support Update disk"
which has an SMP update for Netware 4.1 SMP (more information can be found
by extracting tat file to a floppy disk, and looking at a README.SMP).
Also, there is OS/2 Warp Server that should run very well on it.
Thanks, Alex Burke.

What about Linux (Debian Woody) on Server 320 (EISA/PCI) with 2
CPUs?
I upgraded the DAC960 Controler with the latest Mylex Bios. But if
Linux won't make use of the 2nd CPU I'll keep running Solaris 7 on
it.
Greetings from Vienna

Woody *should* run on both cpus if you compile a new kernel with
smp support. AFAIK, the 320 does not have the C-Bus.
You are running Woody on the DAC? Which firmware do you have,
3.5x or 2.73?

I plan to run woody on it. It is an IBM Raid controler with one
Bios chip. I updated to Mylex 2.73 Bios
I had woody pre running on a 8595 but the harddisk quit living 8-(

If you get it up, please tell us how you did it! (private email
is also acceptable ;) )
As you can see from my latest posts on this group, I'm having a
serious headache with my 520/DAC combination. The same controller
and identical firmware yet it does not want to cooperate with me.
Dang!
One thing that I do know already is that the Woody installers do
not have the latest drivers compiled. Check the www.dandelion.com
homepage for more information. Get 2.4.19 kernel source and the
approriate driver from dandelion than do a compile for bzImage.
The source from kernel.org seems to have the 2.73 firmware
support in 'em.
I'll go back to (w)hacking my DAC960 on the head trying to get it
to understand a few things about life in general.

There's nothing special to doing it (apart from flashing the DAC960
firmware and having the latest DAC960 driver) - one of my DAC960 is
sitting in a Server 320 EISA/PCI, running Woody (well, Sarge now,
but Woody when I installed it :-)

Far from the same machine, however, your 520 being MCA and not EISA, and
that might be the problem.
As I already suggested back in November, maybe the MCA kernel code is
interfering with the DAC960 driver (wild guess)? that's one of the only
thing I can think of (apart from the controller really being bad).

I had stability issues with 2.4.19 on a Server 320/E and can't recommend
it. Better to start with 2.4.18 and experiment with 2.4.19 once the
system is installed...

I will,
Right now I have a spare DAC960P flashed successfully with the
2.73 Mylex Bios and verified that the adapter is still working.
Next I'll build a new bootdisk with kernel 2.4.20 on my PC 300PL
running Woody allready.
Then I'll put 2 disks and this adapter in the Solaris box and
try booting my Woody disk and report the result

Do you have a DAC960P or M ?
Ciao, Hannes
Mine is a DAC960P-2 according to Mylex, IBM codename Savannah.
The original that came with the -mze. Firmware 2.73

Kernel-source 2.4.20 download will commence shortly, I have used
2.4.19 sofar.

DAC driver copyright showing on the custom 2.4.19, then massive
hang. I have to frob the switch just to get any reaction.
