I have a few 4869 external 5.25" floppy drives. I know they come in two
varieties (-001 is 360k and -002 is 1.2Mb), but I don't know how to tell
what I have. The labels say only "Type 4869". I have one controller
which recognized the drive as 360k. However, this could be the limitation
of the controller. The controller I used plugged into one of the floppy
drive bays and was connected to the MCA card via ribbon cable. The drive
plugs into the card at the back of the computer (This was tested in a
model 50z, I believe). Is there any way to tell definitively which drives
I have?

Thanks,
Jason

Look at the bezel. If there is an asterisk (*) molded in the face it is
360kb.
The card that supports the 1.2m is the "James Bond" card (the last 3
digits of the feature code was 007). It is a full length card with the
centronics plug on the backstrap and a berg connector on the card. This
one is full of chips, not just a "pass through" card like the 360 kb
adapter. It also requires a driver and assigns an address above the disk
drives. I do have plans for a cable that is supposed to run the 1.2m as a
B: drive off of the onboard controller but I have never tried it. I do
know the IBM chap who designed it worked for a long time making it work
(on a 55sx). It was an ongoing saga on the PC Forum with Boca and Austin
folks kicking in ideas. Greg

Additionally; the 1.2Mb card works to control both thr 4869-001
360K drive and the 4869-002 1.2Mb unit.

I created just such an internal-to-external DB-37 passthrough
backplane slot cover for ISA slots: used one to install the -002
onto my own 2168 PS/1 when I needed to add 5.25" support and was
out of drive bays.

All of your drives are 360K, firm. I think all of the
4869-001 were actually labelled 4869. It's only the 1.2MB
that were labelled 4869-002 on the label on the bottom.

If you want a 4869-002 for yourself, simply install a 1.2MB
drive. You'll need a 'security TORX bit' for two of the
screws on the bottom.

There are two controllers. The one you have, with the B
drive cage, will only run 360K drives. To similarly run
either 360K or 1.2MB drives, you need the other controller,
which is quite straightforward and doesn't use the B drive
bay. I don't have its p/n handy.

This trick is a lot easier on PS/1s since they use industry hardware. On
a PS/2 it gets a little trickier. If nothing else there is a CMOS>TTL
problem if you are using the old AT (or 3174) drive.
