It's been about a week but the death of Joey Ramone is starting to sink in
around here.

Born Jeffrey Hyman (Jewish, of course), he and the Ramones revolutionized
music and defined punk rock. Not only that, he put Queens on the map.
("Sitting here in Queens, reading magazines, we're a happy family ...").

I never saw his band perform but was given a tape of the Ramones Greatest
Hits as a trade for a tape of Frank Zappa's "Ruben and the Jets." You'd
have to have lived your childhood here to understand how absurd "Rockaway
Beach" was as a take off on surfing music. The only worse beach is Riis
Park or maybe Orchard Beach. Freddie Cannon ("Palisades Park"), eat your
heart out.

And now, a moment of silence. .....

Part of the Borough and County of Queens, along with Forest Hills (Joey
Ramone's birthplace) and Far Rockaway, where Rockaway Beach is.

Um, time for an off key note in the paen of praise. Most punk rock
lyrics I could not comprehend. Say what you will about Marilyn Manson
and the like, but you could listen to the words and follow along (the
little bouncing ball!)...

I never had trouble understanding the Ramones lyrics. But I'm from Queens.
Maybe if I were in Wisconsin I'd have trouble, too. :-)

Hey, I dated a Norwegian woman for a while and she used that word.
What does it mean?

Hey Dan.....

The story I have about that expression was that it could not be translated
properly into English......but if you stepped in a fresh pile of dog poop with
your new penny loafers, you said: "UF DA!!!!!"

Or, I'd bet, like the Portuguese "Porre" around which an entire
culture can be expressed, simply by a different accent or sound to the
word.

Funniest use, January in Lisbon, cold and rainy. Old lady walks by
tall blonde person (obviously NOT native) and says- Hi. It's cold.
Porre!

(you had to be there...)
