I'm thinkin' about (Linux for PPC) ...
I have been working this page but getting some hangups....
http://solinno.co.uk/7043-140/
Good article.......I just can't make it work yet. One of my problems
(I think) is that I run my -140 on a Raritan Switchman. I need to try
it with a direct connection to my monitor.
When booting, I get the prompt "mon>" and I think I am being asked
for some input concerning the monitor........but I am in way over my
head.
CT the Bamboozled
I have a Sun workstation that came with Solaris
Machine specs 110mhz cpu 224megs of RAM
To see if I could get better performance I gave Linux a try
and ended up going with a Debian port...
it worked well enough ...certainly an improvement over Solaris
My first choice would have been a Slackware port..
but unfortunately there was a bug in the kernel and the keyboard mapping
was all wrong.
When I posted the bug it was acknowledged
but AFAIK it was never fixed...and that was at least a year ago...
so I'd say don't waste your time...Just try the Debian port
Woody is what I have been trying....and I have gotten the installation
floppy to boot, so I think I can be successful. I really need to try
it with a direct connection to a monitor.......but then my monitor
connection to my terminal is buggered. I am in a kind of "you can't
get there from here" situation.
I think I might be able to iron it out if I use my N40 as a
terminal.....will give that a whack tomorrow.....
CT the Enlightened
Well I was quite happy with it...
but since the machine is so old I am not using it for anything more than
just fooling around
Tim,
I ran Linux on a 43p for a while. I used the solinno.co.uk root and
boot disks and then did a net install of Debian Woody. I later used
that to bootstrap a Gentoo install and ran that for some time.
Is that mon> prompt after booting from a floppy, or is that the PReP
firmware?
There are lots of "gotchas" when running Linux on these machines, for
instance you need a special boot partition and need to prepare your
kernel image specially. I'd be surprised if the PReP support in Linux
hasn't bit rotted significantly. I was using Kernel 2.6.12 or so back
in the day.
TimR, who is helping me with the MCA RS/6k port, also maintains the
PReP port. It seems it is in good working condition but there isn't
much documentation on the install process:

Kevin
> Anybody here running Linux on a RISQ machine?
I ran Fedora Core 6 on a "Sawtooth" Power Macintosh G4. It really gave the
system a pretty good boost.
Although it hasn't been powered on for a while, I'm sure it would still run
fine.
William
If you are meaning that RISQ = RISC and you count an old i486 as a RISC-Design
my answer would be YES. I had one running a couple of years in the '90 with
debian potato. It was not a PS/2 but this machine still exists.

Like me. No Alcohol at all. Never. Only Coffee. But behind the 4. cup it could
be a drug too - or not? :-)

P.S. why did you call this "trolling"?
Hi Kay.......
I am 76 years old and grew up on the Michigan Great Lakes......and I
have been fishing my entire life. "Trolling" as applies to fishing,
means dragging bait behind a moving boat......hoping to attract a fish
so he will bite upon my bait or lure. You can see that I am using it
to seek help...........
One of the problems with the internet is that it thinks it invented
the word "troll" as it applies to a great group of ignorant dorks who
stir up trouble.....(we have none in this group)
The way I use the term is to seek help......which I do regularly and
the benovelent members of this group usually jump in and provide me
with that help (as you just did...and I thank you)......
If you are ever driving in Portland, Oregon and a little black BMW
goes whizzing by, and the license plate says "TROLL".........that is
my Number 2 son (who works for Intel). He was a wild and unkempt
child, and I gave him that nickname when he was very young....and have
always used it as a term of endearment.
Welcome to the World of Trolls......and I mean that in the most
friendly way.....

PPC not RISC

They're not mutually exclusive, one is a chipset the other is a design
philosophy.

PPC *is* a RISC architecture, and it's one that IBM had significant input
into as well. And yes, it saw use in the RS/6000 lineup.
A particularly unscientific examination of older PPC Macintosh systems
(mostly Power Mac 6100s) show that most of them used processors manufactured
by IBM. Only a few of those had Motorola-sourced CPUs in them.
William
Well this made me think about something - I have two PPC IBM servers
and a drive rack over in the mobile home under the printers. I'm
pretty sure one has RISC or maybe AIX - been some time since I've had
access to them -hung onto them to try PPC linux on them later to see
how they faired compared to the dual PII 330's. If memory of the last
time I had them open serves me well - they had IBM made PPC processors
rather than Moldy Rollers.
Some additions to this.
As you may know the i486 had an Integer-RISC Core that accelerates
Integer-Operations to one Ops per Clockcycle. Fast enough for some jobs.
Then i will test this old machine later and if it works, maybe it became a
CD-ROM Server. It is an Bigtower-Case with five 5 1/4" Drive Bays. And if i
found a harddisc it became 'Eisfair'-Linux as an operating System. Look at
www.eisfair.org. It is an Modular Server Construction Kit with an integrated
Setup-tool that unified all Settings in a simple to use manner. Actually it uses
Kernel 2.4.35
But on my old Model 8580 i want OS/2 because it is IBM-originated too and i like
it. But if i find a way to simply set up an linux for this... maybe i'll give it
a try.
Must be an old kernel or distribution - it has only a slow 386DX25...

Oh yes. Right. My Mistake. I grew up on an Isle surrounded with saltwater but in
my whole life i am not addicted to fishing. :-) This may explain why i did not
know this specially meaning. Thanks for this explanation.

Thats exactly what i thinked as you wrote 'trolling' and i found it does not
match with the question. But i did not know this meaning that you know from
fishing. This was my mistake.
And, you are right. The Internet did not invent *many* things. Especially not
from real live. I believe the Internet is an living virtual image of the real
live with all it's peoples, problems, meanings, etc... and some more.
But most people may think it is an Perfect lawless playingroom that invented
mostly all what they know. Perhaps, except the Holy Ghost and other invisible
things... :-)
> If you are ever driving in Portland, Oregon and a little black BMW
Sorry. It might be actual completely impossible travelling to the U.S. For
several reasons. One is: the amount of data an traveller has to give out of his
hands - it is irrational to me. I can't respect the given reasons for that.
I still have relatives in America but also it is not cheap to visit they.
> goes whizzing by, and the license plate says "TROLL".........that is

Hey, could it be that he's on TV in Germany? Intel had a new Ad here and in it i
see many Intel Employees. :-) And i believe the Ad stated that all viewed people
are real employees.

:-) Yes Sir! <scnr>

And what did "CT" mean? Computer Technician?
Bye/
/Kay
Hi Kay........
CT differentiates between me and WBST. We are both named "Tim". WBST
lives in England, so we call him "Warm Beer Swilling Tim".......
Since I live in America (once a British colony), I am called "Colonial
Tim"......therefore CT.
I have visited your country many times.....I was stationed at Ramstein
Air Base for 3 years...1963 to 1966. (Visited Berchtesgaden
too....beautiful place, but Bayerische Deutsch is hard to
understand :-)
Colonial Tim
thanks for the clrification

RISC is your system's processor architecture. AIX is one possible
operating system and there could be others.
PPC Linux seems like a good option to me. It really gave the Sawtooth
PPC G4 Macintosh I tried it on a good boost over Mac OS X 10.3.9. If I
could have managed to get the printing to work, it would have been
perfect. (And the thing simply hauled on distributed.net RC5-72
activities.)
