Uh ... there's a page at www.ibm.com - click the "support" icon - enter the
"Family" (not "Mafia" ... PC-Server) - then the "PC Server 320". You will get
"downloadables" and "online docs" on the left side ...
Keep in mind that there are various models of the Server 320. One series has
EISA/PCI ... and one PCI/MCA.
>2. apparently it will take 2 Pentium 133MHz CPUs, do these have to be
>"matched?"
They should have same speed (133 - duh) and should have the same "Stepping
Level" (0A = old, 0B = better, 0C = current ... :-) ) My 520 (8641-MZV) has 2 x
P-133 Stepping 0C ... the 520 is the 320 in the bigger Server-500 case.
>3. does anyone out there have one up and running, if so what OS do you have
>on it to take advantage of both CPU's? (Linux, WinNT, Warp Server, what?)
The already mentioned 520. It ran Linux ... but crashed with 2 processors
killing the idle task after some time under SuSE 6.1 - does not support the IBM
F/W Streaming RAID PCI as well (too old microcode: 2.4x installed, 3.x required
... too small Flash to get the 3.x microcode).
Since I wanted RAID and many, many HDs (8 currently - 18 possible) I deccided
to put "New Trouble" 4.0 Server on it. Runs great. SMP and F/WSR PCI fully
supported. Have 2 x 2.5GB in a Raid-1 (operating system) and 6 x 4.5GB in a
Raid-5 (data).
>4. any other advise before I take the dive?
When you buy a unit: make sure it has no password set. The machine has C2
security level and a set admin password *cannot* be deleted with e.g. removing
the battery or suchlike. The sysboard must be replaced .... (some freaks
replace the serial Eeprom ... but that is complicated and involves soldering
... and a new Eeprom of course).
Try getting a "RAID" machine with the Fast Wide Streaming RAID PCI adapter.
You can pull it out and use the onboard-Adaptec later ... but then you have it
if you think you need it ...
Make sure the machine has at least 2 HDs. The drive-trays are sometimes hard to
get. I got 3 Trays for my 520 from Tatsuo in Japan (Thanks again Tatsuo ! It
works great) - that documents my desperation to get some spares.
The unit uses "special SIMMs" - they're EOS (ECC-on-SIMM) and these also might
be hard to get. Don't know if it runs on ordinary Parity SIMMs as well. Must
try with mine recently - but I need that box to prepare a technicians training
course I have to hold some time within the next weeks .... about RAID (who
might have guessed that).

All that is a wrap around mess I'm afraid, but you'll get the idea.

Dunno. Never got around to installing two. Win95 only recognizes one CPU,
and Win 95 is my OS of choice.

I have Win NT 3.51, NT 4 Server, NT 4 Workstation, and Win 2000 Corporate
Professional, and Win 2000 Server. All of these will support SMP.
Still, I prefer Win 95 OSR2 for my simple needs.
> 4. any other advise before I take the dive?

Possibly, but take the dive, and get the machine. It's one damn fine unit.
And with the two PCI slots, this will allow you some flexibiltiy for adding
todays options.
The onboard Adaptec 7870 SCSI controller is real nice also. It has
internal 50 pin and Fast 68 pin connectors, which can be used
simultaneously. There is one Fast external SCSI connector also.
The onboard Cirrus Logic 5430 video ( 1 meg ) is more than adequate for a
server.
Mine is setup with two Seagate Elite 9 SCSI HDD's, one NEC 6X CD-ROM, and
one Archive DAT drive. This fills the whole bay up, but this is adequate for
my needs. There is still some room for a 3.5" drive below the floppy.
Let me know if you dont' buy it.
Good luck.

Uh, any old 3˝ to 5ź "conversion" kit will work fine. I simply used some
generic rails until I installed the 5ź FH HDD's. This case has really nice
SLOTS, and this is a lot easier to bolt things into than HOLES. Very
adjustable.

I had to install Kingston parity memory simms in mine. Strangely, IBM parity
simms would not work. ( I think this is where you had trouble Dennis. )
Obviously, as Peter has stated, ECC simms will work also.

Yeah - but *not* if you got the Server 320 "Hot Plug" RAID version.
This machine uses hot-swap trays ...
I have one in the company - and I try to get it on the "retired" list ... which
means it lands in the trunk of my car about 15 minutes later :-)

Not for long. I am known as a very tolerant instructor. Ask the technicians in
the company. The wounds from the whipping healed pretty fast after I treated
them with salt and lemon juice .... hehehe !

I've a 320 (PCI/MCA) too, and I'm starting a page about it soon. (No time right now.) I've searched the web for info, not much. I've found some, which will show up as soon as possible.
It will run any OS I think but, won't use two cpu's on most OS's. But I will use two on OS/2, Winnt and Linux (if you enable it with the compile)
I'm running two cpu's, the original P75 and a P90 first at 75 but now I've overclocked the P75 and run it at 90 without any problems so far (7x24 for a couple of months)
Read some answers after my replay so I add some info, mine is running Parity 64 Mb. According to some IBM doc's the newer units can run ECC, must try that some day, but time.....Girlfriend takes a lott of time ;)

I have the MCA/PCI version of the PC Server 320 with 2 * P133 processors
and 140MB of RAM running WSeB. It runs OK, but in this day and age of
1GHz processors, it's nothing to get excited about.
If you are a Microchannel fan and can get it cheap, by all means do so,
although if it isn't MCA I don't see the point.

From all the feedback, if it is the newer one (PCI/MCA) I
think I'll get it and start on another journey in computer land.
It sounds like the RAM is the trickiest part. I have
WinNT4Srv but I may try Linux just to stay out of the Windows
software. I am glad someone is thinking of starting a web
page about these machines. I have been looking now for
a while for a good 9595A but haven't been about to locate
one for reasonable price so this seems to be the best
alternative. I know that the Srv320 isn't the latest and greatest
in 1GHz machines but it sure beats the 486-66 I use now as
my main business machine.
I'll keep all informed on the progress/problems from the
ground up restoration.
later,
charles....
PS. I won't see the gentleman again who is selling these
beasts until the middle of this month.

It's a nice machine.
I have 2 of them now, both PCI/EISA with the Mylex Raid Controller and
Hot Swap drives.
one is 166MHZ, I just added a 2nd 166 CPU, and it runs fine with WSeB.
The other one is 133Mhz, like yours. Would like to run Linux on it, but
I'm still looking for upgrade firmware chips for the Mylex Raid
controller.

Where is a good place to get WSeB, eBay, or just scrounge around?
How did you "overclock" your 166? or is that normal config?

Does that mean that I may not be able to run Linux on a standard
configuration because of driver problems? or is it just that card?
thanks,
charles....

Sometimes it can be found at ebay. As a registered solution developers I
downloaded it from Devcon.

It's a normal config, the Model/Type is 8640-EE1.

It's just that card, the DAC960 that comes in some of the Raid models of
Server 320. If you have an other SCSI card you are out of that trouble.
Look at the front of your server and post the model number. My 133Mhz
Server 320 is labeled as 8640-3D0.

I'm seeing the same thing. There are lots of missing posts here.
I'm not seeing responses to my posts, just the responses to
_them. I don't know about AOL.
