Hi all,

slightly OT, but should be of interest to some of the readers. I recently
managed to salvage up one of these controllers, but unfortunately it looks
like someone swiped the NVRAM chip off the unit (why would anyone want to
do that?) I'm assuming it's a standard chip, so can anyone tell me what
make and model it is? it's the 30 pin chip, the socket is next to the
external port and the two flash ROM sockets (one of which is empty, as
expected).

The ID on the rear side of the controller is D040351-0-IBM. The BIOS also
identifies itself as an IBM model upon boot. I'm assuming this is the FWSR
PCI, but I'm not 100% sure. According to Mylex, it's a DAC960P.

BTW. has anyone noticed that the newest version of the Linux DAC960 driver
(released Oct 11) now supports firmware v2.73 (the one that only occupies a
single flash chip)? I'm guessing/hoping that this means that my controller
will work with Linux, with an appropriate firmware upgrade (currently v2.35).

And what's the status on the Linux Passplay/Cheetah driver (if the project
ever got off the ground)? I wonder how big a step it is from the v2.73 that
is supported and to the 2.x that the Cheetah uses, or the 1.x that the
Passplay uses even. I was thrilled to notice that support for v2.73 was
added to the DAC960 driver, despite the fact that the previous version
claimed that "no support is envisioned"!

bye,

Laust

Not until you mentioned it. Time to resurrect that DAC960PL
controller...

Could be a BenchMarq, probably the bq4010YMA-200, if it's like the PassPlay
or Cheetah adapters. There's also the Dallas D1225Y-200 on the DAC960LB.

Cheers,

Well, it looks like it's a 28-pin chip and not 30 like I thought
(I don't usually have to count that high ;-)

Guess I'll try with the Benchmarq from my Passplay and see if it works!

Backup the RAID configuration onto diskette first, as that's what's in the
NVSRAM chip. That way you won't lose the PassPlay configuration info. when
it's possibly overwritten for the new adapter's configuration but you want
to put it back in the PassPlay.

Well, the PassPlay isn't in use right now (simply because I haven't found a
UNIX with good support for it yet) so I won't loose anything, but backing
up might be wise all the same...
