Hi,

I just bought a trackpoint keyboard, and its nub is very insensitive and I
have to press really hard to get it to move, where "really hard" is relative
to the trackpoint I have at work.

I have to press so hard that it is not worth using. I am using it on
Solaris 8.
What can I do to fix it?

thanks in advance

They normally don't physically move much at all. The one I've got is
strictly a pressure thing. I doubt it physically moves more than about
20/1000th of an inch.

You might try increasing the sensitivity of the mouse driver.

Use a bigger hammer than the one you have now. That'll move the pointer, but
it's kinda hard on keyboards/trackpoints... :-)

Seriously, the keyboard might need a good cleaning. Had to pull apart both
my IBM ThinkPad 365ED and Compaq LTE 5000 for the same problem of having to
press hard to get a result. Not to mention, the result was usually jumpy
movement anyway. They were both pretty dirty, but after a good cleaning,
both work excellently.

As for the cleaning, see if you can pop off adjacent keys and the trackpoint
"nub". Set them aside and carefully vacuum the trackpoint. This alone fixed
my IBM's trackpoint. Had to get a little more agressive with the Compaq,
though.

well, thanks for both comments. But I guess I could have been a little more
clear. First, the keyboard is brand new, or so the guy on ebay says--and it
did come in a new box. Second, I realize the nub does not physically move
that much: what I meant was that I had to place an exorbitant amount of
pressure in order to see results on my screen.

Maybe this is what I get for using ebay.

Also, if anyone has a trackpoint driver for solaris or red hat, please throw
me a bone.

Thanks,

Any driver for a Microsoft or Logitech 2 button mouse should work...that's
what both my trackpoints are identified as under Win95/98...so I would see
no reason why Linux or Solaris wouldn't work using similar drivers, and I
know that (Redhat) Linux has a generic MS Mouse driver...
