Just "inherited" a PS/2 55SX and have the un-explainable urge to get it
working.
On boot it gives errors 161 and 163 plus a graphic that says Not OK and
points to something like read the manual.
After a bit of googling I replaced the Dallas DS1287 RT chip but same error.
Seems I now need a Reference Disk but all the links to the rf5565a.exe file
are down.

Anyone able to help; offer an alternative link that works or any other
polite suggestion.

Hopefully the two IBM-oriented sites are still active but also posting to
uk.comp.homebuilt as I know you are a helpful lot.
Thanks

You have come to the ultimate group of people with un-explainable urges.

We tend to call it MADness (as in Microchannel Addiction Disorder), an
otherwise harmless affliction.

Surf this group's history for more on this subject.

Those are harder to come by every day. Don't throw the old one away, you can
rework it (takes some benign destruction, but it works).
You might want to take a look here

Well after downloading the Reference disk all went surprisingly well for
this 22 year old veteran.
Everything seems to be working fine after the test routine.
Now to load up an OS and investigate further.

May need a bit of help ,folks.

Having installed the RT battery, found a Reference Disk and setup the 55SX,
I then tried to installed MS-DOS 6.11
It said it wouldn't do it as there was already a version of DOS on the HDD.
So I formatted the HDD and proceeded with the install which seemed to go
okay.

However on reboot it doesn't go to the c drive and DOS but remains with the
screen which says at the bottom
1.list 2.run. 3. load 4.save... etc

1. can any kind soul help me here? If the HDD is duff I am surprised the
format and install went okay.

2. I really need to read up about the system more and have ordered Peter
Norton's book on the PS/2 system but it'll take 2 weeks to get here. Looked
at the net a lot and found a lot of useful stuff but need a users manual,
for example to tell me what list/run/load etc all mean. Any links for that?

3. Do I need a Diagnostic disk? Seems it might help. In which case can
anyone provide a download link for that as well.

Many thanks for your patience and help
Dave

You've probably not set a bootable Primary Partition, as it's booting into
ROM Basic. If you've a bootable diskette, boot that and leave it in the A:
diskette drive, then "C:", "CD DOS" and "FDISK". You may then list your
partitions etc. and Set Bootable Partition, before you exit to reboot, after
removing the diskette.

As Tim said, you may not have a bootable partition set. Use FDISK to set the
partition as startable if that's the case.

Should you find that the partition is startable, chances are your 55SX needs
a little kick to get going again. For whatever reason, I've noticed that the
55SX can't always properly initialize the DS1287 NVRAM/clock module. It'll
go through all the steps and seem to work, but the machine will refuse to
boot from the hard drive, instead going to cassette BASIC every time.

The solution is to use DEBUG and use a script to forcibly invalidate the
contents of the DS1287. Boot from a floppy disk, run DEBUG and enter the
following: (this--from computerhope.com--is more detailed than some I've
seen, but it works)

A <ENTER>
MOV AX,0 <ENTER>
MOV AX,CX <ENTER>
OUT 70,AL <ENTER>
MOV AX,0 <ENTER>
OUT 71,AL <ENTER>
INC CX <ENTER>
CMP CX,100 <ENTER>
JB 103 <ENTER>
INT 20 <ENTER>
<ENTER>
G
Q <ENTER>

Reboot immediately afterwards and have your reference diskette handy. The
system will complain about being misconfigured and not having its time and
date set. Reconfigure, reboot and you should be able to start the system
from the hard drive once again.

At this point, it is quite possible that you might have a weak Dallas module
(this is the thing on the planar with the "alarm clock" printed on it) that
won't hold the configuration correctly or for very long. If that's the case,
you can replace it or rework it:

figured it out and got good at it)

Hi Tim,
Checked and it does look as if the C: drive has been formatted as a primary
partition.
Not sure how to check its bootable.

Hi William,
Many thanks for your very comprehensive reply. Appreciated.
I did what X above suggested and it does seem I have formatted the c: drive
as a primary partition. Not sure however how to check if it's a bootable
partition but also did a fdisk /mbr so hope that would fix it as there is
only one partition on the disk.

But still no success.
So tried your suggestion.

Did "a>debug" and also "a>debug c:" and "c>debug" (not sure of the syntax)
but any of the commands gave error.
Could you kindly give me a bit more clue as to how to use this debug script.
Many thanks
Dave

1) The debug utility (AFAIR) isn't on the first DOS disk.
2) Boot from the first DOS disk and seek for debug on the other disks.
May be you find debug.ex$ (can't remember), so you'll have to expand it
elsewhere and put it on a floppy disk.
3) When you fire up fdisk, if you list the partitions, the DOS primary
partition should have an uppercase A, meaning it's bootable (active).
4) Since you can see the HD from fdisk, it should work.
5) A broken installation should end up with "Missing operating system" or
similar, before switching to ROM basic.
6) If you boot from a DOS disk, can you access the HD, doing
c:
and then
dir
to list disk content ?
7) The debug "script" (as you called it) is a small assembler program,
zeroing the cmos data (index register port 70h, data register port 71h).
A bit rough, deleting FFh bytes.

Let us know something ! :)

Hi!

If you have installed DOS, you'll find DEBUG in your \DOS directory.

Start it from there after you've booted up from the setup floppy and then
exited setup.
