in order to boot from a floppy just once, press Alt-SysReq. In order
to always boot from the floppy or from the hard disk drive (if any
installed), use the file CUSTOMIZ.EXE.
Come to my page dedicated to the 2011 and 2121 at
"http://www.physics.mcgill.ca/~alban/ibm2121.html" for more
information.

Also I have no customiz.exe file - I think the previous owner had
deleted a lot of stuff - nor do I have any floppies. Can anyone tell me
where I can get this (or is there a kind person who could e-mail it to
me)?
I'd also be interested to know the current upgrade options (if any).
Thanks

if you have the 2011 or the 2121, go to my page (you quoted its
location). All the information you may need is there. If you have a
different model, state the exact model number and post again with a
detailed description of your problem.

Also I think if you try Alt-Ctrl-Sys Rq whilst booting this may alow you
to boot from floppy

Many of the HyperText links are bad/out-of-date; such as:

As with the PS/2 line, it is important to post the system's
Type and Model numbers (such as: 2011-xxx) when posting requests
for assistance on such systems.

That's because it is most likely booting from the `ROM Drive'
(a ROM chip that *appears* to be a `hard drive'; but isn't);
rather than from the `fixed disk (hard) drive'.

you are right about the stale links on my page. IBM changed around
their support a lot recently. They may not offer these pages at all
any more right now or in the future. I have not had the time to update
my links. You can click on the local link "copie locale" right next to
the IBM link, though, and get a copy of those pages that I saved
locally. They should all be there.

I've followed the links which were very useful.
Thanks to everyone who responded - the machine is now working fairly
normally :-) I would still like to know what upgrade options are
available. I am wondering whether I can link the machine to my P133
(running Win95) to share files and printers. Any ideas?
i know nothing about ps1's, but if you're running win for wg on your
ps1, then just pick up a couple of cheap ethernet cards and connect
the to machines together. if dos and/or win (not fwg), then install
something like dos tcp/ip, which will allow you to connect to your
win95's files and printers.

Upgrade options: Very few. Memory can be upgraded to 6 MB max on the
planar (2 MB soldered, 4 MB proprietary module). CPU can be upgraded
with a very rare and very expensive special 486SLC that snaps over the
SMD CPU. Video memory (512 kB) can not be upgraded. Video chip on the
planar board can not be disabled. Monitor can not easily be swapped,
because it supplies power for the system unit. Hard disk drive can be
upgraded to 504 MB max (standard IDE). The European versions have a
serial card (more like a simple connector) instead of the standard
2,400 bps modem. This card is also available separately and can
replace the modem. Maximum recommended modem speed on that connector
is 14,400 bps since the async chip is an 8250 only. There exists a
proprietary audio/game card that is mounted above the modem or serial
card. If you have a model with ISA slots (machine type A with adapter
card unit ACU or machine type B), you have a few more options: Memory
expansion card, SCSI card, serial card with 16550 chip, etc. Note that
one can't boot from a SCSI hard disk drive, even with the IDE hard
disk drive disconnected.
If one can find a 5.25" diskette drive option (mounts underneath the
system unit), it would be interesting to try to install an IDE CD-ROM
in it. It should be possible.

Good move. IBM is notorious for shuffling it's sites around. I saw
the local copy notation and when the link showed up wrong or not there
figured it referred to a local IBM site. I have a 2011-e34 and am
familiar with PS/1 so I was able to overcome the quad and stub
problems, etc. but am curious about the mem-module board. Mine is
blue. Is memory only upgradeable by replacing the whole card and
paying IBM's outrageous prices or is there a 3rd-party supplier still
in business or a reseller like the one on Decarie ( at Snowden ? don't
remember their name) who might have them ?

I had inquired about prices for the 4 MB module 92F9694 in December.
Actually, a web search turned up lots of sites in the States that
still offer the module. They cost around 40$US. Somebody I talked to
on the phone claimed they actually make them to order. Yeah right.
I e-mailed a few places in order to find out whether there are
distributors in Canada/Québec. I didn't pursue the matter any further
at the time, though. I just now called GB Micro in Montréal (333-7373)
who can get the module made by Transcend and who referred me to
Informatique Dumoulin on St-Hubert (385-1777) for retail. They say the
module will cost 65$CDN +tx. and it would take a week to get. Call GB
Micro for other retailers in Montréal.
A company in the States close to Montréal would be Centon in NH
(Cheryl Soriano; (603) 893-3350 Ext. 8002). They sell the module at
36$US.
All in all fairly high prices for 4MB. I think I will just stick with
the 4 MB (2 MB on motherboard and 2 MB on expansion module) that I
have now. I am keeping my eyes open for an ISA memory expansion card,
though. That would have to be a 286-style board as the 2121's
processor is a 386SX.
