How can I open the bios setup dialog?
Thanks,
Reinhold

PS/2s have very specific ways of doing this. In the case of the
P70....
Open the case (three screws, two under the rear feet and one under the
hinged cover on the back).
Find a two pin jumper block near the end of the memory sockets (the
end furthest from the edge of the main board). Shirt the two pins
together and power the machine on. When it's finished the power on
tests, remove the short.
Replace the cover.

I am using an IBM 9577 computer to test that a number of
3com adapter cards are working correctly. Do you know how to
get into the IBM config setup without having to reboot the
PC each time. I need to get into this setup so as to change
from internal to external transmit on the adapter cards and
back again.
End quote
It seems that he wants to toggle a setup option from the
command line. Assuming that running a DOS system is fine
(Win NT? Yeah, fer sure!) is there a way to keep the system
in a quasi-setup state where you could test the adapter,
then change the option without rebooting?
Yes, I know the system has to query the card. And the system
configures the card based on the POS info on it. But if it
was merely difficult, why would I ask?

Pretty trivial. One one would have to do would be:
1) put the slot in setup mode
2) toggle the bit
3) take the card out of setup mode
A DOS program to do this would be easy, given a copy of the ADF to say
which bit needs to be flipped (and of course the slot number)

Get a new copy of the reference disk - and don't use M$-dirs etc unless the
disk is writeprotected.
You'll find a lot of stuff on your PS/2 at:

good luck

I hope you mean the Power On Password.
"the usual way to remove a password is when being ask for
it, you simply add a "-" (minus sign) at the end."
IIRC it is "password<space>". Type in the password, then hit
the space bar once, then return.
BUT the admin password should be controlled from system
programs.
ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/refdisks/p70-386r.exe I just
checked, that file is still on IBM's site...

But he needs to fix the password FIRST....
Bob, obviously you are a throwback to the unenlightened
teaching methods. If 2+2=5, that's fine. As long as you want
it to be 5, why that's good enough.

Is it necessary to disable the passwordprotection to run the ref.disk?
good luck

Fine - that '-' really works.
But how do I now set a new password ?
Thanks,
Reinhold

Missed that - sorry! Need some sleep.....

Any idea how to avoid hard disk backup, re-installing PC-DOS and trying to
boot from the ref disk?
Thanks again,
Reinhold.
Create your ref-disk by running p70-386r.exe from Dos/MDos/OS2.
You'll be asked to insert a 'blank, high density disk in drive a:'
PS/2-ref-disks use special systemtracks, from which it is 'bootable' to the
biossection.
good luck
