Hi Gang!

Wasn't paying attention during some HDD's testing recently.

Allowed the BIOS to "save" a "No HDD" configuration. I can't change it back
without a reference disk. Naturally, I can't find mine, if I ever had one.
Got a disk for every PS/2 ever made though.....

Does anyone know where I can download a reference disk for a:

IBM Valuepoint 6381 F30 ?

Thanks!

Hi Bob,
Are you sure this one needs a ref disc?
I don't have a listing for any VP refdiscs on my list.
Thought it would be a F1 at power-on to access bios settings.
I'm still looking through files just in case.
Don't happen to know the file name??
Best o luck,
Pete.

Pretty sure. It has that famous IBM graphic asking for a floppy disk to be
inserted on start up now. Can't change the HDD option in BIOS. Aggravating.
Stupid of me also.

Hi Moussa !

I guess I'm too dense to determine which of those files might be a reference
disk for the 6381 VP. The files I checked were not ref disks. If you get a
minute, can you tell which one is correct ?

Thanks very much!

Hi Moussa !

Thanks, I'll check it out. I really appreciate it.

Gotta unplug, lightning storm approaching. ( House once had a direct hit.
Unplug ever since. )

And, I gotta go to work. That REALLY cuts into the day.

I meant to make a comment on your classic post also, and forgot.

With the HDD out of the list of start-up choices, it is asking for some
bootable media. With no inbuilt BASIC for it to default to, it will sit for
ever waiting for something to do, hence the prompt?
Fire up the VP, bang something bootable up it as what transpires!
Could even start displaying images of transfat plastic asian something
trinkets something ......OH, I forget the rest!

Hi Pete, Moussa, and GANG !

Well, this is about as embarrassing as it gets........

I was doing some testing on my VP for the ibm.classic newsgroup. Long story
short, the reason the computer would not allow me to "change" the IDE HDD,
is because the cable was pulled out of the IDE connector on the motherboard.

I'm sure Master Sgt. Knight will appreciate this:

Sir, NO EXCUSE SIR !

I had installed about 5 or more drives in an attempt to answer a question,
and I guess the connection on the motherboard had finally had enough of my
fiddling, and semi-pulled out.

Moussa's VP diag disk revealed that no HDD was attached. Using my best Bruce
Willis smirk, I decided to open both blind eyes, and cast my snickering know
it all look at the actual hardware.

Ahem ( as Don Peter would say ).

Let's just say, this was another in a long list of life's lessons.

Although I did find something else out because of this, which will actually
answer one of the main questions a poster had concerning this issue, I
should have known better.

Thanks for the help, and I will begin taking my dementia pills again. Or is
that anti-dementia ż

Hi Bob......

When I first entered electronics school at Keesler AFB in Mississippi
a wondrous long time ago, the first thing they taught me about
troubleshooting was to look for the most obvious reason
first...........a lesson well-learned and disregarded about a zillion
times by me and many many others :-)

Also back in those days when Electronic Fundamentals was really
fundamental, they would say that if you can't find the problem, go to
the circuit breaker that keeps popping and hold it in tightly.....and
look for the smoking black wire! Fortunately some genius came along
and designed a breaker that wouldn't work that way.....or we would
have burned up a lot more airplanes that we did. (When I was
stationed at Ramstein, I personally set 3 airplanes on fire in the
short period of about 6 weeks......my commander was glad to see me
return to the States.)

Chalk it up to a brain fart.....they happen often in advancing
age.....

Ahem ... Anti-dementia.
For dementia it suffices to drink half a bottle of vodka usually.

And Bob: take the *red* ones. Not the blue ones.
The blue ones will stiffen up things only ... which will make work more
complicated while sitting.

Maybe the idea of a "computer checklist" weren't too bad from a
particular age on ? I turned 48 recently and apart from forgetting names
for a number of years already I also forgot to plug back the power cord
just recently and wondered *for a fair amount of time* why the system
failed to turn on after a card swap ... serious signs folks !

Not necessarily...the red ones may have the same effect...

Ooof.
And I already wondered why I felt so ... hmmm ... funny.
Guess it is time to return to the usual diet of 3C.

(Computers, Cola and Cigarettes)

In two years, when I turn 50, I plan to -finally- stop smoking.
I've been on it for 35 years already and I think it is enough then.
Have financed that stupid government with my taxes way too much so far.
And there are more funny ways to kill oneself.
Like an overdose of these blue pills. (Or the red ones. Whatever.)

Interestingly enough, this is mentioned as a possibility in the
sci.electronics.repair FAQ...for use only when you're particularly
desperate, of course.

William (been tempted a few times--haven't jumpered over a fusible
part yet!)

It is a valid troubleshooting technique, and one that I have used.
"Follow the smoke". When you have a high component count and a short
"somewhere", you can spend quite a bit of time disconnecting things to
try to find the short - unless you have access to a micro-Ohmmeter or a
current probe. Not cheap or common test instruments. A potentially more
destructive method than the "well calibrated finger" (WCF) technique,
but time is money, and you do what you have to do.

WCF can be risky too. I've suffered second degree burns at work to my
finger more than once from a PQFP Motorola 68000-series processor used
in one of the security cameras that I repair. These suckers can get that
hot when they are bad without blowing the system fuse or shutting down
the power supply. I have literally boiled water on them. After the third
or fourth time, I learned. Still, it's easy to forget in the heat of the
moment. So to speak.

I taugt "EP" aka Electronics Principles at Chanute AFB in Rantoul from
85 to it's close in 93 along with my actual AFSC course in air
launched cruise missiles and it was still as basic/fundamental as it
could be at first, at least I taught my blocks in the old school
common sense fashion. When I was a newbie right out of Lackland in 77
I went to "Fundies" or Electronic Fundamentals at the now-closed Lowry
AFB in Denver and vacuum tubes to intergrated circuits to include
analog, digital and discrete were taught. Same thing though - do the
common sense thing first - use your eyes and also use the theory part
in your head to determine what it should be doing to figure out why
it's not doing it. Output to input troubleshooting basically.

I declined testing for E7 Master Sergeant as I was taking a voluntary
early out under TERA in 95 so I never made it to MSgt, only a TSgt or
what we nicknamed Testicle Sergeant E6. Works fine with me - I pay two
mortgages, utility bills, insurance and most of the groceries with the
retirement check. I run a business because sitting around would drive
me crazy especially after 20 yrs of USAF service and growing up in a
family that did a lot in a little time and everyone did everything -
no such thing as women's work or men's work. Were many a time my
sisters helped my dad in the garage and likewise my brother and I
helped mom. We all did our own laundry, everyone had a turn at dishes
and cooking. Maybe that's why Lackland was a breeze for me.

I know Tim is a little older than me (I'm turning 52 in Feb 09) so I
imagine he may remember 1505's and when all AF insignia hd silver
stars in the middle, who knows he may remember when they were
transitioning away from Army style chevrons (not a slam Tim, I would
love to have been in the Air Force when they broke away as a separate
branch).

Hi Russ......

My oldest brother enlisted in the USAF in 1949 so he was in the "Brown
Shoe Corp" and wore the old army-style chevrons. I came on board in
1951 and we had OD's for winter wear, but the new style stripes.

The transition from Army Air Corp to the United States Air Force was
great....primarily because we discovered that we were finally in a
civilized branch of the service :-)

CT (whose daughter was in the Army...go figure)

Funny you should mention missiles. I found at a ham estate sale about a
month ago, nestled in a box of vintage radio books (many of which came
home with me also), a very interesting item. An Air Force manual, circa
1957: Guided Missile Fundamentals. In nice condition.

Actually, my son spotted it. That was just too cool not to bring home
with me. I was only slightly disappointed that it was not stamped
"CLASSIFIED".

My dad served in the Air Corps in WW2. He was an aircraft mechanic,
hydraulics I believe. Served in both EU and Pacific theaters. He didn't
talk about it much - not at all that I recall. I can only imagine some
of the stuff he must have seen...

We had a copy of that tech school training manual at Lowry in 76 and
someone found a copy of it at Chanute when we had to scrap a bunch of
Houndog missile test racks out in the old test cells at the back of
the base - it mysteriously disappeared but unfortunately not with me.

I miss the military in some ways, super glad I'm done with it in
others. Nice thing is VA just put an outpatient clinic half a mile
away - I'm already set to get routine dental work done free, by a
dentist that retired from local private practice now works for VA (to
think I used to pay him for services now he's paid by taxpayers).

Been out 13 yrs and havent been to a military quack since I retired
even with Ft Knox 40 miles east of me...go figger.

I also picked up two (identical) RADAR manuals in like condition, but
the missile manual has a much higher cool factor. Talk about an unusual
coffee table book. I skimmed through it a little, but haven't had time
to sit down and peruse it thoroughly. I enjoy looking through vintage
books and tech manuals to see how things were done in the "old days".
Sometimes interesting ideas surface from a new perspective.

I never served in the military. My three older brothers were Navy, so I
get to hear some stories from them. I think I probably would not have
done well, I have problems with authority. I can't stand being told what
to do by some dumbass that doesn't know as much as I do... :)

Thanks, Russ. I do enjoy reading the stories, and I appreciate your service.

No different than working in the corporate world and some clown that s
been employed 2 weeks but sat on his butt in college (paid for by you
and I or his parents) so he gets the management spot over you whose
been doing that job for 8 to 10 yrs. At least the militar has a
management training sytem (well until field promotions occur in combat
areas due to needs over skills).

You are joking of course. After getting busted in the National Guard I
decided to transfer to the Naval Reserve as I did not get along with my
new CO. When I went to him to have him sign the transfer papers he
marked 'Not Recommended for Reenlistment'. Of course the Naval Reserve
would not accept the transfer. His reasoning was because he had just
busted me he couldn't mark the 'Recommended for Reenlistment' box. It
took over an hour to convince him to correct the paper work. I kept
telling him that if I wasn't recommended for reenlistment then let me
out now, but that he wouldn't go for that.
As far as the needs over skills that was part of the reason I was
busted. I entered getting promised Electronic Test Equipment Repair
school only to be told it would take over a year for the school to be
available. The first class available was a TTY repair school so I took
that. I then transferred to Las Vegas and became the Captain's driver
as they had no need for my training. I was then briefly a tank loader
and then finally a Radioman. All without any further training.

Ah, just let the clown entertain you. Imagine, a circus without clowns...
