Error code 10483 on a PS2 means it has an ESDI hard drive controller error.
Might want to try looking for a new controller card first... ;-)
if that doesn't solve your problem, then it is the electronics on the hard
drive itself that is the culprit... might want to go ide or scsi in that case.
Other error codes on IBM PS/2 could be found in

"Daff" is right that 10483 is an esdi drive error but wrong in assuming that you can change the controller card. It is on the system board. (Maybe that's what the ;-) was all about?)
I would make a first guess that the drive is faulty. I think that the cost of a scsi controller (mca) and drive for this machine would be a waste of money (and the case isn't big enough to take it anyway). Try to find a second hand esdi drive or use the machine for spares. Sorry to be so negative but I wouldn't waste money on a 386 MicroChannel machine. Sooner or later something else may go. Good money after bad...
Best wishes,
Paul.

The model 55 is particularly prone to this error. I ran into it myself
when I had one of them. The cable tends to come loose over time and,
when it is loose enough, the error message results even though there's
nothing actually wrong with the drive or the controller. Try opening up
the case, pressing the cables firmly into position, then rebooting.
It worked for me.
