Feedback welcome.
Assuming we're talking about the external socket on the back of the
motherboard. Check these:
1. Maybe the plug on the cable is loose on either end. Improper
seating at end will introduce some static, or sometimes will give you
one channel (left or right).
2. One conductor in the cable is severed at some point. If the cable
was homemade or has been in service for a long while (and presumably
manipulated many times) there may be a break in the connection
somewhere in the cable along one of the wires -- Presumably the one
for the left channel.
3. The cable may not be the correct type. The line in is a 1/8"
STEREO miniplug (aka Sony walkman plug). 1/8" miniplug cables are
sold in mono and stereo variants. You can tell if it's mono because
the mono-plugs look like they're 2 metal segments separated by a
plastic material. The stereo one has 3 segments.
4. The player source might be mono. If the source is mono, you'll
only get one channel. Which one depends on the construction of the
source and cable. You'll need some sort of adapter to duplicate the
signal at both left and right.

Make sure one that you are using a stereo cable, and more importantly, that
you have a stereo output, and that your cable isn't broken.
