I have been trying to set up my Tropez for a day and I still haven't
found a way that would prevent my PC lock up when boot to Windows. My
problem is after I finish the installation of the drivers, Windows won't
start.
I have tried the following IRQ and DMA settings:
Sound Blaster Pro WSS Wavefront
Setting 1 IRQ 7 DMA 1 IRQ 7 IRQ 9
Setting 2 IRQ 5 DMA 1 IRQ 7 IRQ 9
Setting 3 IRQ 7 DMA 1 IRQ 7 IRQ 5
I am using the default memory address for both the WSS and Wave front
(530 & 330). My old PAS16 had been using 330 so there shouldn't be a
problem for the memory address. Also, when I boot my PC without the
TZMODE.EXE, I can boot to Windows successfully. (Still with the
SETUPSND.EXE line in autoexec.bat).
I also cannot use TBCD in Windows
If anybody is using the Tropez, I would like to know your settings. Now
I am totally frustrated. Please help me out!!

I use the Sound Blaster Pro mode in DOS and it is configured as port 220 / IRQ 5 / DMA 1. In Windows,
the Windows Sound System is configured to port 530 / IRQ 10. And on both, the Wavefront synthesizer is
configured to IRQ 12. I don't use IRQ 7 for any since printers use that line and sometimes I play music in
the background while printing.
If I had a guess, I would say that there may be a line from your PAS16 left in your SYSTEM.INI file that
could be causing a conflict. When you do get into Windows (with TZMODE.EXE not loaded), does any-
thing work with the Tropez? Or does it just not exist to the Windows system?

I've just gone through problems with Windows bouncing me right out.
I have a PCI bus Pentium computer. I found that setting the PCI
interrupt in the BIOS to 11 instead of 10 helped me for some reason.
I saw no actual conflicts. Here's my current, seemingly working
Tropez settings.
Sound Blaster Pro: IRQ 5 (LPT2:) DMA 1 Port 220
WSS: IRQ 10 DMA 1/0 Port 530
Wavefront: IRQ 15 Port 330
Midi MPU-401: IRQ 9 Port 310
I avoided IRQ 7 to allow me to use non-polled printer i/o in OS/2 Warp.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I tried, but it does not work.

I am using the exact same setting. I even tried to use IRQ 10 for the
WSS setup. And as usual Windows won't starts.
As someone has suggested, I checked my PCI IRQs and only found out I did
not assign any IRQ to the PCI devices. I also tried to set the printer
port to using IRQ 5 but it does not work either.
I am wondering if my board is defective since I can use all the features
of the card in Windows even I don't have the TZMODE loaded (I can
record, play MIDI and .wav files and use all the OPL3, Digital Audio and
Wave modes in MousePlay). So it should indicate the IRQ, port settings
are fine inside Windows. It just the TZMODE does not like Windows.
Do you know what the audiodrv.zip file at the Tropez file section at the
Turtle Beach BBS is for?
When I install the Tropez software, the program keeps accessing drive A.
Would it be the possible cause of my problem?
I found under the [opl3.drv] section in the Windows system.ini file has
a setting portFM=388. I tried to change it to 220 and it made no
difference.
I have E-mail Turtle Beach for my problem but haven't received any
reply. Now I think I have tried everthing. May be I should just return
the card.
Thanks.

I believe I still need the tzmode loaded in config.sys to setup the IRQ and
all other settings even I don't use the on-board EIDE port.
Anyway, after I called up the Turtle Beach support line (phone on hold
for 15 mins,) I GOT MY CARD WORKS!!! The fix is to put the TZMODE line
in the config.sys preceding the QEMM driver line! Who the hell can think
of it?
So if anyone has trouble getting the Tropez works, I strongly suggest
you to move those TZMODE, SETUPSND lines around the config.sys and
autoexec.bat.
Thanks for everybody who helps me to get the card works.

It is not a "problem" ... just that when Windows loads, it initializes the card differently than in
DOS. You just need to rerun the SETUPSND program to get everything working fine in DOS.

IRQ 15 is used by the second EIDE channel, if you use it for a hd
with your controller or if you have connected a CD-ROM to the Tropez
you can't use this.
I had another problem using a CD-ROM with my Tropez:
When I used QEMM windows made a cold reboot on exit.
I solved that by moving the line with TZMODE to the top (before the
QEMM drivers).
When you want to use the CD-ROM Audio functions you have to install
the [MCI] CD-Audio (MCICDA.DRV) first (part of windows).
Make sure it is installed as "CDAudio" because the TB tools (TBCD, Sierra)
won't accept others (ie: "CDAudio_1 or so). Change this if needed in
the win.ini/system.ini. (not sure now :)
Btw. I don't think it's useful to call the setupsnd from the autoexec.bat
except the next line is C:\GAMES\DOOM2\DOOM or something similiar :)
If I need MIDI sound under DOS I call a little batchfile.
My setup for DOS:
IRQ DMA PORT
SB 5 1 220h
WSS 10 1 530h
MIDI 9/2 - 330h
Wavefront 9/2 - 330h
My setup for Windows:
IRQ DMA PORT
WSS 7 1/0 530h
MIDI 9/2 - 330h
Wavefront 9/2 - 330h
The Ports for MIDI & the WF interface can be the same, they won't collide, but
never use IRQ 9 for WSS (as done by the Tropez INSTALL program)
For the CD-ROM you don't need to specify any port/irq because they are
standardized. Simply turn it on.
I hope that helps you a little bit...
ps: maybe something of this is useful for the Tropez FAQ

Guess what? I got a new problem. Though I can starts Windows with the
TZMODE loaded now, whenever I quit Windows and go back to the DOS
prompt, games (like Pacific Strike) wouldn't recognize the Tropez
as a Sound Blaster Pro anymore. For some games (like One must Fall 2097)
the sound simply mess up. For the Pacific Strike, the game just states that
there is a setup error for the sound board option and refuses to start.
I have tried to run TZMODE -S again but it still doesn't work.
Now I am trying to move around the SETUPSND line in the autoexec.bat to
see if it would fix the problem.
Ooops! I just read the Maui FAQ. May be I have to run the SETUPSND again?

The values in the windows ini-files are DECIMAL! The port address
220 is hex! Don't mess with the ini-files if you don't know what
your'e doing! :)
Sometimes i feel like i have to use tzmode twice when i want to re-
initialize the mode i'm currently using. Try to switch to -w and then
to -s again.
Putting SETUPSND won't help, because it's ONLY for the Maui Part
and doesn't have to do anything with SB Pro, WSS nor OPL3.
btw. TZMODE is never loaded! Tough it's written like a device driver
it only inits the Tropez an quits immediately. It's only a driver to
be loaded from config.sys (before the CD drivers).
Make sure TZMODE is in the very first line in you config.sys (before any
QEMM specific lines) to avoid crashes on windows exit.
Hope that helps...
